Anna was the only surviving child of Anton (Goldene Antony) Kneissl. He disapproved of her marriage to Andreas, a poor ropemaker. Anton was quite prosperous and known for holding mortgages on his relative's homes. As Anna was pregnant, she and Andreas married in Palling some distance from Schrobenhausen, but Anton and Philip Dollinger, Andreas' step-father witnessed the wedding. (Wedding record from microfilm in the Salt Lake City Library.) Either she miscarried or the infant died very early, because her daughter Ottilie was the first recorded child of the marriage.
Widowed at 53 in 1901, Anna set up her oldest son Andreas in a Sileri (ropemaking business) in Aichach, and purchased the building in which her daughter and son in law Johann (who was her first cousin) set up business in Fuerstenfeldbruck.
Her son Raimund also became a Seilermeister and ran the business for his mother until he married.
She then moved in to her father's house (he lived until 1906)in the Stadtmauer (city wall) around the corner from the convent of the Englische Fraulein - an order of nuns expelled from England by Henry VIII, where her granddaughter Anna Kneissl (Hofstetter) lived with her and attended the school from 1914-1917.
In her later years she lived with her daughter, Ottilie Schafer Kneissl, in Fuerstenfeldbruck.

Sr. Irmina was sponsored in her Confirmation by Anna Kneissl Hofstetter and always remembered by her. Part of a very large family, she entered the convent in Aug. 1938 and was the convent gardener. A very pleasant lady, she was delighted when in 1981 and 89 we visited her in the convent.1
BIOGRAPHY of Anna Ottilie Kneissl Hofstetter, b. June 10, 1901.
Born in Munich, the only daughter of Johann Baptist and Ottilie Schafer Kneissl, she had one older brother, Hans, and three younger-Tony, Raimund and Otto- all 3 years apart.
1904 - The family bought the home and business at 16 Hauptstrasse, Furstenfeldbruck, Bavaria, where she grew up and and was taught by nuns to do beautiful needlework. As a child she had diptheria twice. The second time, she remembers walking up a hill to the Dr.'s house feeling awful and wondering why her mother made her do that instead of having the dr. come to the house. He didn't see how she could have gotten it again - there were no other cases in FFB. But she had been at her grandmothers in SOB where there were cases.
1922 - She came to the U.S., sponsored by her Uncle Max. Also travelling to the boat at Bremen from Augsburg, was George Hofstetter, a friend of her cousin, whom her uncle also sponsored. As they boarded the train, her mother said to George, 'Take good care of her,' little suspecting what would result. Arriving at Ellis Island, she went on to work in New York as a chambermaid and Atlantic City as a waitress.
1925 -As she'd promised her parents, she returned home - but wearing George's engagement ring. Her parents arranged for cooking lessons at a hotel, and one day before her permit expired, she returned to the U.S.
1927-October 22-she was married at the All Saint's Church in Brooklyn, and honeymooned briefly on a boat trip to Boston.
1928- September 10. While George was out hunting for a taxi at 5 A.M., Louisa was born on Linden St. in Brooklyn.
May 23, 1930 -All three went to Germany, stopping to sightsee in Paris. (Her passport indicates arrival in France June, 1930. George soon returned to his job, but Anni was not well, and her parents sent her to Meran in Italy for a rest cure (TB was suspected, but it may have been the beginning of her problem with gluten absorbtion.) She returned with Louisa (who had stayed in Fuerstenfeldbruck with her grandparents) to New York on March 12, 1931.
1931 - The Depression- RCA told George to keep his job, he'd have to work in Camden. The house at 2 Browning Road in Merchantville was rented for $25 a month, until by saving every penny, they bought it for $3,000.
1933 - Her parents made their only trip to the U.S, and saw a good part of the Northeast, visiting the Chicago World's Fair, Washington, DC and the Shenandoah valley, and of course New York.
1937 -She took Louisa to Germany for the summer for a family visit.
1939 -May 16-Ellie was born in Cooper Hospital in Camden and we got a telephone (just a party line.)
-1945 World War II - George was not drafted as he was a father doing defense work, and cousin Andrew was in the U.S.Navy - her brothers and nephews were drafted into the German army.
1944 -March 24- she became a U.S. citizen. Although she lamented the lack of a formal education, her skill as cook and seamstress was well used over the years. She took courses in dressmaking and slipcovering, and became a serious gardener, lecturing to her Begonians on plant propagation.
1949- She took Ellie for her first of many trips to Germany.
1954-After many pleasant vacations on Long Beach Island - and a few hurricanes - they bought the cinderblock Cape Cod at 8 W. Pennsylvania Ave. in Beach Haven Terrace, where the whole family enjoyed the island.
1969 -Dad's retirement brought many nice trips - Scandinavia, England, Greece, the West, and visits to Germany where they bought the Mercedes, which still serves well in CT.
1980 - After 52 years of marriage, she lost her husband following a long illness.
1951-1990- She acquired seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren over the years.
1985-A misstep in Beach Haven caused a broken hip, which was replaced and a good recovery made.
1986-Moved to Old Trail, bringing all her furniture, Speedy, and many plants to her new garden, where she still beautifies her part of the world with her green thumb.
Nov. 1993 she fell for no apparent reason in her living room and had hip surgery just before Thanksgiving. The artificial hip which had served her well for 8 years had to be replaced with a longer pin, as this fracture was worse. Ten days after surgery, she went to a nursing home 3 miles from her house, where they have a very active physical therapy regime, and gradually she has progressed to the point where she could now get in and out of bed by herself, dress herself and go over 50 feet with a walker. Unfortunately, the exercises and weight lifting on the leg aggravated an old hernia problem, and after an trip to the Emergency Room when the hernia became strangulated (bouncing in the ambulance put it back in place), but surgery was required in January 1994. Some time before she was told she had the beginnings of cataracts, and while she blamed medication she was taking, she couldn't see well enough to read, and her mail had to be read to her, as well as writing replies. She does still enjoyed TV, having the newspapers read to her, getting regular reports about her beloved Speedy ( who missed her while she was in rehab) and keeping up with all the family news. My son Peter and his wife had their fourth, a boy John, on Dec. 21 and there's a new great-grandchild due in California by the end of January. That will make 10!1

Magdelana was very religious, and planned to have all her children enter the religious life. None of them did, but because they received good educations the sons were able to get good jobs. Magdalena, when her nieces and nephews came to visit, expected them to kiss her hand, according to Anna.
They had 11 children. The oldest, Xavier, studied for the priesthood in Rome, but did not complete his studies. He became a tax official in Berchetesgarden. The second, Hans (another Johann Kneissl!) became an army officer, and always had an orderly attached to him. He retired to Utting am Ammersee with his wife Maria in 1980. They had three children.      Hans Kneissl, a first cousin of Anna Kneissl Hofstetter, had been a (Oberamtsrat) chief county official in Utting and when visited in 1981, was the first to show his Ahnentafel Book. It was required of all in the military, universities, etc. by the Nazi regime that one's ancestry be confirmed in official records. When approved (showing there was no Jewish ancestry) it was stamped with the official Nazi swastika symbol. Hans provided an enormous amount of Kneissl data for this genealogy with the information it contained on the Kneissl ancestry, but said that because of the swastika, many people threw these booklets away when Bavaria was occupied by the U.S. Army after WWII.
He was the eldest Kneissl present at the Kneissl family reunion (Treffung) in 1989, and of all the Kneissls in his generation was outlived only by his cousin Anna (14)in Baltimore.1

Xavier was an innkeeper in Sattelberg. He sold this, and bought another in Grimoldshausen, from which his oldest daughter married Kaspar Stegmeier. Then he sold this inn and moved to Schrobenhausen, where his son Johann met and married Ottilie Scha'fer, and where he retired. He is buried in Tandern, where his son Xavier had an inn at the time.
Xavier's first wife, mother of Johann died at 44 after the birth of her sixth child, who also died.
Xavier's second wife, Maria Siegel bore him two children, Ottilie and Teresa.
Her first daughter,Ottilie Kneissl married Anton Schafer, brother of Ottilie, so Johann, her half brother was a brother in law to Anton Schafer in two ways- as his wife's brother, and his half-sister's husband! Untangling the Kneissl-Schafer relationships was quite a task. No wonder Anna as a child just addressed all her relations as Herr Fetter and Frau Bas (Mr. Cousin and Mrs. Cousin)!
Teresa, second child of the second marriage never married. She lived in the U.S. for many years. Resi, as she was known, gave a cuckoo clock to Anna Kneissl and George Hofstetter as a wedding present when they married in Brooklyn in 1927. It entertained their children and grandchildren, and now hangs in the home of their greatgrandchildren, Elizabeth and Julia Goedeke in Harmonyville, Pa.
