Donald Shaeffer Hawley of 45 Morton Place, East Orange, an amatur tennisplayer during the 1930's and a commercial artist died Friday after beingstricken with a heart attack at home.
Mr. Hawley was a lifelong resident of East Orange. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Eleanor (Peck) Hawley, and his mother, Mrs. George P. Hawley of East Orange.1
A graduate of New York University, he was on the tennis team for four years and played in the intercollegiate championships. He also attended the Art Students League in Newark for two years.
Mr. Hawley played most of the top tennis players of the time, including Don Budge, Sidney Wood and Pancho Gonzales. His best year was in 1937 when he ranked second in the East and among the top 25 tennis players in the country. He won over 200 tournaments in his career. He was New Jersey State champion twice and New Hampshire state champion four times. In later years, his interests turned to tennis umpiring. He officiated at many tournaments, including the Marlboro Open at Orange Lawn and the U.S. Open at Forest Hills this sumer. He was a member of the EasternTennis Umpires Association and the U.S. Tennis Umpires Association.
By profession, Mr. Hawley was a commercial artist, doing freelance workfrom his own studio for many years. In 1964 he joined Gordon Pihl and Associates, an East Orange advertizing agency. Two years ago, he took over the firm as president and changed its name to Agency Printing Service, Inc.
