Harriet was educated in the East Rutherford Schools. Pictures of her classes remain. Because she had attained the necessary credits at age 15, she was graduated from high school, the 2nd ranking member of her class. She and her family were members of the Rutherford Methodist Church, and later the Wesleyan Methodist Church in East Rutherford. She was secretary of its Epworth League.
After graduation, Harriet attended Business College. In 1917 she applied for a job as a stenographer at Flint Kote Roofing. She was hired by her future husband, John Oswald Short. One 'quirk' was that John Short was a British Subject when they married. Harriet lost her citizenship and had to be a naturalized citizen.
In 1933, after the Depression wiped out home and savings, the family moved to Milford, Connecticut. Harriet became active in the Congregational Church in Milford, was active in the PTA, the Red Cross and hostess for many family gatherings of family from New Jersey and New England. In 1941, she suffered a cerebral hemmhorrage and miraculously survived with no long term effects.
She was a house mother during WWII at a home for girls who worked in defense plants, and continued working after the war on a part-time basis. After the death of John Short in 1953, Harriet traveled mainly to homes where her daughter's husband was stationed. In 1973 she suffered a cerebral 'event' and passed away July 21, 1973. Married name: Short.

James Kirkpatrick1

M, d. 19 June 1842
James Kirkpatrick married Elizabeth (?)1 James Kirkpatrick died on 19 June 1842 at Haverstraw, Rockland County, NY.1

Family

Elizabeth (?)
Children
The death certificate of William Washington Kirkpatrick was signed by a friend of the family. It says the father was George, and the mother Mary. While in the Rockland County Courthouse in June 1996, I located a legal paper of a James Kirkpatrick. This paper which calls the family 'Kilpatrick' states that James died without more than $100.00 in property and that his son Hiram wished to be the Executor. The widow's name was Elizabeth. Children were Hiram Kilpatrick, Eliza wife of William Allison, Mary wife of Patrick Hughes, James G. Kilpatrick, Marquis Kilpatrick, Gilbert Kilpatrick and William Kilpatrick.
In 1848, brother Gilbert Kirkpatrick, deceased, was named in a surrogate court paper by his widow Catherine. In the paper she named herself, Elizabeth and Marquis of Haverstraw; James Harvey Kirkpatrick and William Kirkpatrick of Nyack; Hiram Kirkpatrick of New Jersey and Mary wife of Patrick Hughes, residing in Penn. Because there was only one William Kirkpatrick in the 1850 Census of Nyack, and in the obituary he was listed as the youngest of 10 children, I believe the William Kirkpatrick of our line is the son of James Kirkpatrick who died in Haverstraw 19 January 1842.
It was noted while I was in the Haverstraw Library, that in the early 1800's, a special soil for brickmaking was discovered along the banks of the Hudson River in Haverstraw. Hundreds of brickmaking operations were setup which hired thousands of laborers. A possibility of why the Kirkpatrick family moved into Haverstraw.
There were no deeds for James Kirkpatrick. However, brother Marquis and wife Phebe sold land in Haverstraw in 1860 and recorded 1862. Phoebe Ann, wife of Marcus Kirkpatrick was buried 3 March 1861 age 35 years at Mount Report Cemetary, Haverstraw. (Records of Graveyard Inscriptions Rockland Co., NY.)1

Family

Cornelia Garnier Kruger b. 1 Jul 1876, d. 5 May 1933
Children
Milton Kirkpatrick and Cornelia Garnier lived at Randolph Avenue at East Rutherford, NJ.
Having no birth certificate for Milton Kirkpatrick, I must rely on family history to pinpoint his birth at 12 Aug 1869 in Nyack, Rockland County, New York. His marriage return of the State of New Jersey lists his parents as William Kirkpatrick and Emma Warner, both born in America. The newspaper of the wedding lists him as being formerly of Nyack.
Attempts to locate additional information on Milton Kirkpatrick were fruitless except for one printout of members of the Nyack Baptist Church which lists both Maggie and Milton KIRK. A letter from the church states he was baptized 23 Mar 1884, and excluded 2 Jun 1891 for neglect of covenant obligation.

Land deeds list the residential property as being on Gedney Street. In 1875, the land had belonged to Margaret KIRKPATRICK and was bequeathed to Charles and William and their wives. The land was bounded by Gedney Street, the Hudson River, Hannah Coddington. Also, the gas company. The land was then deeded to Emma KIRKPATRICk in 1875 for $1050. In 1881, Thomas T. V. Warner deeded land to Emma L. KIRKPATRICK on the northerly side of Elm Street adjoining lands of John Doyle and Ann TenEyck. This land was eventually sold to Cornelia KIRKPATRICK in 1896 for $1.00.1
Information in the Nyack Library states that William KIRKPATRICK was born in Newburgh and had lived in Nyack for 53 years before his death in 1894. He was a painter and foreman for DD & T Smith. Lists sons as Charles, William, Henry and Milton. Charter member of Mazeppa and a lifelong Democrat who switched to Republican in the Blaine-Cleveland election. His Certificate of Death states he was 72 years, 5 days, born in Newburgh, son of George and Mary Kirkpatrick. He died the 9th of October 1894 of a cerebral hemorrhage. His obituary states he died at his home on Gedney Street and had been sick for years with consumption. He was born in Newburgh, the last of ten children. Margaret, wife of William was born about 9 Nov 1827 and died 12 Mar 1855 at age 27 years, 4 mos, 3 days. William W. Kirkpatrick was born 5 Oct 1822, died 6 Jan 1892 at age 89 years, 3 mos, 1 day.1
While in New City June 1996, I found a Surrogate's paper on James Kilpatrick listing wife as Elizabeth (signed with an X). Children listed were Hiram, Eliza wife of William Allison, Mary wife of Patrick Hughes, James G Kilpatrick, Marquis Kilpatrick, Gilbert Kilpatrick and William Kilpatrick. Later, Catherine Kirkpatrick, widow of Gilbert Kirkpatrick, filed in Surrogate court naming the family as Catherine Margaret Kirkpatrick (widow), Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, Marquis Kirkpatrick in the town of Haverstraw, James Harvey Kirkpatrick and William Kirkpatrick in Nyack in said county of Rockland, Hiram Kirkpatrick who resides in New Jersey and Mary wife of Patrick Hughes who resides in the state of PA (Gilbert deceased 27 Sep 1848). Given that William Kirkpatrick's death certificate information was given by a friend, I believe William's father was James as stated in the legal paper. Bears looking into.1
