     At age 14 (1838) Thomas left school and went to work on his brother, James', farm.1 Thomas W Suffern was in 1840 a district school teacher for 2 years. In 1844 he was in the timber shipping business and was very successful for years. In 1857 he was teaching school in a boarding school.
Thomas later converted the boarding school into a large building for summer guests. In 1882 he was school commissioner for Rockland County and served for 6 years. Later he became the audiot for the town of Ramapo. at Wortendyke, Bergen County, NJ.1
