Evert Duyckinck was a painter and glazier at New Amsterdam. He and Gerrit were also artists who colored the stained glass windows in the Dutch Reformed Churches of New York and Albany. Windows representing the coats of arms of the members of the consistories were among their masterpieces.1
Evert and Hendrikje are listed in the NYDC member list of 1686 as "Evert Duycking and his wife Hendrickje Simons" (member #408-9, name #511-2.)5,6
The Duyckinck family, although living in Germany immediately prior to their migration to America was not of German origin. Gerhard Duyckinck of Borcken was surnamed Hollander but according to his statement in the petition of 12 Aug 1620 he was a native of Westphalia. Other members of the family long before him had lived in Germany. In the Hanseatic city of Lubeck can be found in 1514 a merchant by the name of Gerhard Duyckinck, but the original home of the family was in Dordrecht, Holland.
Gysbert Duyckinck married the daughter of the Count of Marck in Westphalia and lived in Dordrecht in 1230. He was a military engineer and built the fortifications around Dordrecht. In 1265, his oldest son, Willem Dukinck was a member of the Board of Three Men on foreign relations at Dordrecht.
About the middle of the 16th century, Dutch and Flemish orthography changed the 'u' to 'uy' so that Duckinck became Duyckinck.
The leader of the Borcken 'Baptist Pilgrims' was Gerrit Duyckinck. His son, Evert and his wife Hendrickje, like many other settlers of Baptist origin, became members of the Dutch Reformed Church.1 Name variation: Evert Duycking.7
