William is 39, b. NY, blacksmith; Mary is 38, b. NJ. They are next door to John W May and Susanna Wanamaker.⁵ The 1880 census lists William Valentine May and Mary M at Paterson City, Passaic County, NJ, with stepson Isaac Wanamaker (23, b.
