Nicholas was a Huguenot who fled to Holland from France. He came to North America aboard the 'Pumberton Church' in 1662 with his brother Francois, and his sons John and Moses. He settled near Kingston, NY and later removed to Bergen, NJ. Later still he returned to New York.
His line has been traced back to Hugh Du Puy, the crusader, who was given sovereignty of Villa d'Arce for distinguished services in Palestine. His father was Raphael du Puy, an officer of high rank to Emperor Conrad of France in 1033.¹
