Egbert Van Borsum came c.1638 from Emden, Holland, to New Amsterdam. Emden is a little town across the River Ems from Delftzijl, Groningen, The Netherlands at the mouth of the Ems River on the North Sea Coast of Ostfriesland. Emden Germany, Niedersachen Land (Lower Saxony) was part of Holland before 1744. Emden, East Friesland was under German rule but had many Dutch charateristics.
Egbert and Antie (Annetje) Hendricks (from Amsterdam and Sweden) have the distinction of having the first marriage recorded in a church record in New Amsterdam, Dec 11, 1639. In 1644 he was skipper of Prince Willem, a trading ship between New Haven and New Amsterdam. From around 1645 - 62 he ran a ferry between Manhattan and the present Fulton Street, Brooklyn, and was a tavern keeper. About 1656 he moved from Manhattan to a new house at Ferry Street, Brooklyn. (Information from Jay Potts, 816 Country Road, Vestal, NY 13850.4,7
In 1644 he was the skipper of the 'Prince William' that traded between New Haven and New Amsterdam. He gives his brother Cornelius power of attorney.
