Elias Michielsen Vreeland was born at Rensselaerwyck, NY, (probably; At marriage he is of "Goemonepa.3,4') He married Grietje Jacobs Van Winkle, daughter of Jacob Walings Van Winkle and Tryntje Jacobs, on 30 August 1665 at New York City (DRC) (He was Elias Michiels, jm at Goemonepa; she Grietje Jacobs Wyngaerden, at Hasymes. Konight has her as from Wyngaerden.)3,5,6,7

On 30 August 1665 a commission was issued to Captain Nicholas Verlett to be President of the Court of Judicature for Bergen, Gemoenepaen, Ahasymes and Hobocken, with the assistance of Hartman Smeeman and Casper Steynmets, of Bergen and Elias Michiels, of Gemoenepaen. He took the Oath of Allegiance to the king 22 Nov 1665; was a member of the Bergen Church 30 Dec 1666; elected representative to the General Assembly from Bergen 7 Jun 1673; from Essex 1683; from Acquackanonk and New Barbadoes1692; 1693, 1694, 1695, 1683 and 1707. The records of the Legislature show that he was quite a prominent member of the House, serving frequently on committees of conference with the Governor and Council. In 1692 and 1693 the East Jersey Legislaature appointed him one of the commissioners to assess the provincial tax in Essex County. The Act calls him 'McKilson; and his name is misspelled in every possible way through the records of the Assembly. 13 March 1675-6 he was commissioned assistant for the County Court at Bergen and again 18 February 1676. In 1683 he was one of the judges for the County of Essex.
15 July 1675 he was commissioned Ensign in Capt. John Berry's Company at Bergen, and was appointed one of the Justices of the Peace for Essex County 24 March 1682-3. Winfield states that he was a resident of Essex County in 1683. By deed dated 26 April 1698, Elias received from his brother, Hartman, for L17.10s, a one-fourth interest in the tract bought by Hartman from Christopher Hoogland, known as 'Stoffel's Point. 'It is undersstood that he lived on his portion of the tract, at what was known later as 'Dundee' in the present City of Passaic. He probably moved on this land when he left Gemoenepa, as Hartman's deed for the tract was dated 16 February 1679-80. He first occupied a small stone house near the south side of Passaic Street, a short distance east of the Dundeee Canal. This was replaced by a larger stone house, near the site of the other, but the foundation of the first house was plainly visible about 1800.
He was commissioned a Justice of the Peace 10 October 1692. 25 May1693 he was appointed a Lieutenant in the Foot Company for Acquackanonkand New Barbadoes; 29 August 1693 he was commissioned one of the judgesfor the Small Cause Court for the same two settlements; 1694 he wasappointed by the Legislature one of the road commissioners for EssexCounty, by name being written 'McChilson' and again Justice of the Peacefor Essex County 26 December 1699. March, 1684 he united with hisbrothers Hartman, Johannis, Cornelis and others in the purchase of'Haquequenunk' from the proprietors. They had previously purchased theIndian title and he was an actural resident there in 1683. The Indian conveyance is as follows:
'Att a Council held at Eliza Towne the 30th May Anno Dnl 1684.' The petition of Hans Dedricke Elias Mekellson and Adrian Post in behalf of themselves and other Inhabitants of Aquaquanuncke setting forth they had purchased by order of the late Governor Carteret A Tract of Land Containing 5520 acres wch is to bee devided amongst fourteen famelys of them, those settled pray that they may have a gen'all Pattent for the same, - It's ordered that the Indian sale being recorded - Arrerages of Rent paid, that a pattent be madeand granted them at one halfpenny p. Acre yearely Rent.'
Accordingly about ten months later, or March 16, 1684 (N.S. 1685) a patent issued by the East Jersey Proprietors to Hans Didericks, Garrett Garrettson, Walling Jacobs, Elias Machielson, Hartman Machielson, Johannis Machilson, Cornelius Machielson, Adrian Post, urian Tomason, Cornelius Lubbers, Cornelius Rowlafson, Symon Jacobs, John Hendrick Speare, Abraham Bookey. The consideration was '50 (pounds) sterling the same being in full payment and discharge of all arrears of quit rent' and a yearly quit rent of half a penny per acre, or 14 (pounds)
At the recapture of New Netherland by the Dutch, Elias was constituted one of the Schepens for Bergen nomination by the people, (August 18, 1673). In a deed executed by his children dated June 24, 1711, he is spoken of as 'late of Acquackanonk, deceased.' In 1694 he was the first Elder of Acquackanonk Church, and May 22 1698 and May 1703 he was elected to the same office. (See Hachensack records).8
Elias was the eldest son of the family and in this connection it is interesting to note that in mentioning their children the parents of those large families were accustomed to name them in order of birth. This is particularly true in wills and other important papers. Name variation: Elias Michielse Vreeland.9 Name variation: Elias Michiels.
