Guler claims to have included the 1850 census sheet for Peter, but it must have been lost. A 1850 record for a Peter DeGroat (48, b. NY) is in Warwick, Orange County, NY, with wife Margaret (46, b. NY), and 9 children: Peter A (17), Owen (15), Sophia (14), Emma (13), Mary A (11), John (10), Joseph (8), Elsie (6), David (5), all b. in NY, all are Mulatto. In 1840 a Peter DeGroat (24-34) is also in Warwick with his wife (21-26), and a son and daughter (both under 10), which does not fit with the 1850 census (unless some of the children in 1850 are not his, but are just living with him)
A Sophia Amelia Scott, daughter of Peter DeGroat and Margaret Mann died on 26 Jul 1900 (registered 22 Jan 1901) in Stockbridge, MA (age 53y and 6 mo, b. in Warwick, NY), which would make her birth year c. 1846. This is 10 yrs younger than the Sophia in 1850 (and 20 yrs older than in 1870). Her father is also listed as b. in Warwick, NY, her mother as b. in Rockland, NY.6,7,1,8,9
