He lists his birthday as 9 May 1875.3 He was captain of a boat (1920-30), a bargeman for the railroad (1918.)1,7 The 1920 census lists Johannes Spinhoven and Johanna at Ward 2 at North Bergen, NJ, with their children Johanna (11), John (7, b. NJ), and Jacob (5, b. NJ). They are listed as immigrating in 1910, the father filed papers, the mother and daughter are still aliens.7 The 1930 census lists Johannes Spinhoven and Johanna at 284 Palisade Ave at Union City, NJ, with their children Johanna (19, telephone operator), John (17, b. NJ, clerk for the railroad), and Jacob (15, b. NJ.)1,8
     In 1921 they visited the Netherlands, arriving back in the States on Aug 1. Johannes is 46,

     Jan Hendriksen Splinter was born in 1626 at Bommel, Gelderland, The Netherlands.3 He (1) married Lysbeth Jans.2,4,5 (Banns on 25 June 1650 at Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He was 24 yr, geb. Bommel; she 20 yr, geb. Amsterdam. A note in the margin has more info, but is hard to read. There was some complication, because the banns were not published until 31 Jul.)3 Jan Hendriksen Splinter (2) married Annetje Abrahams on 22 July 1662 at New York City (DRC) (He was Jan Hendrickszen van Bommel, wid Lysbeth Jans; she Annetje Abrahams, jd from Amsterdam.)5,6 Jan Hendriksen Splinter died before 16 August 1693.7

Names wife Annitie Jans; children Cornelius (eldest, not heard from in 16 yrs) and Aeltie (married), procured by my former wife Elizabeth Jans; children Abraham, Pietertie, and Lyntie Van Bomell (unmarried), procured by my present wife Annitie Jans. Executors: John Harberdingh and Jacob Boelen. Witnesses: Martin Clock, Albert Clock, John Harberdingh, and Wm. Bogardus. Jan was blind, so could not sign

     The birth certificate of Arthur Spohn which originally showed Span as the name but was corrected in 1941 by certificate amended. Richard Mann holds birth certificate.

Henry Spohn died on 5 April 1922 at Kearny, Hudson County, NJ, (Other note has date as 2 Apr 1922.) He was buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Upper Montclair, Section W Lot #3.

     More information: the marriage certificate held by Richard Mann from the state of NJ, shows that he was a Coachman.
     The 1880 census shows the last name as Spaun but other certificates show the name as Spohn.
     Essex County information shows a John H Spaun born to Henry Spaun on this date. This appears to be the correct information.
The 1870 census shows him living with the family in Montclair.
     Information from the cemetery shows him living in ghe Soldier's Home in Kearney, NJ at the time of death and that he died from Septicaemia. Name variation: Henry Spaun (, also John H Spaun, Henry Sphon.)

     More information: Richard Mann holds obituary from the paper and a copy of the 1900 Census showing that he was an inmate of the Children's Home in Montclair.
He is listed as a chauffeur and I have pictures of him in his uniform. Family letters addressed to him by a Kate Wallace, who identifies herself as a cousin and her mother as an aunt to his mother who lived in Montclair and refers to family that still lived in Phillipi, WV and his father who reportedly moved to OH where he started a second family that possibly resulted in 2 daughters.
Birth is confirmed by Ashtabula Genealogical Society email 12/5/2003, Probate Court Birth Record Volumn 2 page 276 on LDS microfilm reel 890258.
RM holds copy of the marriage certificate showing that he was living in Phillipi, WV at the time of the marriage.
     Harry Scott Mann and Mable Spohn are the grandparents Richard Mann; great-grandparents are Henry Spohn and Susan Tuers; great-great-parents are Joseph Samuel Tuers and Lydia Campbell. Name variation: Mable Sphan. Name variation: Mable Spaun. Married name: Creeden. Married name: Mann.

     William Spohn, Mable Spohn, Arthur Spohn and Harry Scott Mann were listed in the Children's Home at 121 Gates Ave at Montclair, NJ,in the census of 1900.2 William Spohn and Mable Spohn were living in the Children's Home at Gates Ave at Montclair, NJ, in the census of 1905.3 William H Spohn was a chauffeur in a garage.4 The 1930 census lists William H Spohn at Cedar Grove, NJ. William Risdale letter refers to him being in the service during WWI and possibly being wounded. He is listed in the census as a vet. Except for name and birth date everything else is from the 1930 census. He died shortly after my mother met him which would be some time after 1940. I never met him but did meet his widow as a child.
The date was confirmed at NJ State Archives.
