William sold his mill property for $50,000 in 1874 and retired. He and the family moved to Rutherford. Jim and Will got jobs in NYC working for the Knickerbocker Ice Co.
The mill had been sold to Albert Z Ackerman but he didn't pay the mortgage so they foreclosed. Mr. Ackerman wouldn't leave so Grandpa Veldran watched from the station until Mr. Ackerman went to lunch then he went up, locked the doors and retook possession of the mill. Mr. Ackerman sued to obtain possession of the turbine wheel that he had installed. Mr. William N Johnson (later senator) was Grandpa Veldran's lawyer and he won the case.3
William and Margaretta sold their property to son, William H for the sum of $20,000 on 25 Oct 1877. After his death the remainder of William's estate (after the cash bequests) was divided equally between the seven living children.2 William Samuel Veldran lived at Hoboken, NJ.3 Name variation: William Vildren.5
