Listed in Sandy Creek Hundred 'family of 10' Hoyes of MD page 206: Casteel Family
The Casteels trace their descent from Capt. Emanuel du Chastel, of a distinguished Flemish family. He arrived in Philadelphia and took the Oath of Allegiance on Sept 10, 1863. He became a wealthy mrchant in Philadelphia. During Queen Annes War in 1707, he commandered the sloop 'Resolution' which sailed under letters of Marque to prey upon French & Spanish commerce. By his will, proved 25 Mar 1712-1713, Capt. Chastel left all his property to his wido, Christian, whereby her will of 1714 left property to their children Samuel, Edmund & Christian
The notes from the history from the Hoyes of MD also include excerpts from page 204 -
The DeWitts
There are three pages of handwritten notes starting with T.C, Dewitt coming from Holland and settling at Esopus Ca 1660. A wedding of a DeWitt to a Casteel is recorded after 1800. However there are no family group sheets for these DeWitts. (Maybe they are in a different hanging file.)2 Name variation: Capt. Edmund du Chastel.
