John immigrated to Albion, NY, via Montreal and Lockport, in 1854 with his wife and children, George, Emma, Urssla and Richard. The rest of the children, except Jane, preceded them to North America. Jane and her husband remained in Horrabridge.¹ The family name is reputed to have derived from Vonstein, a Netherlander.²
