     Jerome De Witt attended New Milford Academy and Gibson Academy.1 He graduated in 1868 from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.1 He moved c. Oct 1868 to Binghamton, NY. His wife was from Newark Valley, NY.1 Jerome De Witt lived in 1911 at 33 St. John Ave at Binghamton, NY.1 Jerome began the study of law in the office of the Hon. William Barrett. After a year he read law with Judge Horace J. Griswold and later with Judge Benjamin N. Loomis. He was admitted to the bar in Albany in Feb 1871. He then became a partner with William H. Scoville in the firm of Scoville and DeWitt. The partnershiup continued until 1890 when Mr. Scoville died.
Jerome was active in the Excelsior Fire Department of Binghamtoin, NY. In Nov. 1897 he was elected mayor of Binghamton, the office which he held for two terms. He was appointed to the board of managers of the Binghamton State Hospital in 1906 to fill a vacancy and reappointed for another 5 years in 1907 but resigned after in 1910. In Jan. of 1911 he was appointed to the Binghamton Board of Education for a term of 5 years.1

Her father served in the Revolutionary War.4 He settled at Johnstown, in Garret County, MD, about 1826 named in his honor (now called Hoyes). The farm was later owned by D.O. DeWitt.2,3 John bought Military Lots Nos. 1664, 1665, 1680 and 1682 from James H McFadon of Baltimore. This formerly was called Johnstown in his honor and later called Hoyes, Garrett County.1

     John DeWitt was John was a farmer who took over the family homestead in Johnstown. John deeded lot #2 for a consideration of $55 to the trustees of the Methodist Church. In the churchyard are buried many of the DeWitt family members.
