     Charles DeWitt was born in 1727 at Hurley, NY.^1,5 He married Blandina DuBois, daughter of Garret DuBois and Margaret Elmendorf, on 20 December 1754 at Kingston, NY.^1,5,3 Charles DeWitt died on 27 August 1787.¹

     Charles DeWitt was in 1751 appointed manager of the great Livingston Manor. Robert R Livingston was Chancellor and had a lifelong association and friendship with Charles DeWitt.
Charles served in the Provincial Congress for almost 10 years. He was a member of the committee that framed the constitution of the state of New York. It was at this time that he drew up his will and the opening sentence indicates his state of mind: 'Considering the uncertainty of life especially in these times of trouble, and as I am in a few days to go down to New York, where I may fall a victim to the British tyrants who are arrived to invade the metropolis, it being uncertain whether I ever return do make and publish my last will, etc.'
He was colonel of the militia for the regiment from northern Ulster County.⁵ Charles inherited flour mills at Green Kill under his uncle's, Charles Brodhead, will. The flour turned out by these mills was of exceedingly fine quality.      Charles Gerrit DeWitt was a student in the law offices of Peter DeWitt, a noted NY lawyer. He did a clerkship in the Navy Dept. in Washington, DC. He was closely associated with Commodore David Porter. He returned to Kingston and set up a law office.
Charles founded the Ulster Sentinel and was elected to Congress in 1828. He was appointed Charge' d'Affaires to Central America - Guatemala City.¹
