     Dr. Johannes De La Montagne was Johannes was a Huguenot physician of great and varied learning. He was associated with Gov. Kieft in the government of the colony.1

Johannes la Montagne and Andries Hudde, husband of Gertrude Bornstra, relict of the late Hendrick de Foreest, that they had amicably agreed respecting the bouwery and personal estate left by the said Hendrick de Foreest on the island of Manhattan, called Vredendael, 216
p.14. 11 Oct 1640. Receipt of Johannes la Montagne to Andries Hudde, in his above-mentioned quality, for the sixth part of the personal estate of the late Hendrick de Foreest, from which he (La M.) promises to pay to Johannes and Isaac de Forest, such portion as is rightfully theirs, 217.9

     Jean left France about 1610 and was studying medicine at the University of Leyden in 1619. He probably came to NY in 1624 with Jesse De Forest, but upon the latter's death he returned to Leyden with the widow, whose daughter he married on 27 Nov 1626. He married secondly to the widow of Arent Stamm. She died in 1670.
     In 1636/37, Jean returned to New York where he was one of the most famous colonists, filling high offices all of his life: he was appointed to the Governor Stuyvesant's Council, serving from 1647-1655. He was in chief military command in Manhattan 1640-1645 and Vice Director General, Fort Orange 1656-1664. He also practiced medicine for some years in Harlem where he acquired a 200 acre farm.
