NJ: John (5) and Sophia (2 mo); and John Cosine (55, b. NY, hatter). JOhn is 57, b. NJ, farmer; Leah is 57, b. NY. They are enumerated right after Abraham Bertholf (62, b. NJ, farmer), his wife Jane (62, b. NJ) with Margaret Banta (72, b. NJ, widow), and Peter (30, laborer) and Jane (28, servant) Cissine, both b. Ireland; and right before Cornelius Bertholf (26, b. NJ, farmer), his wife Rachel (22, b. NJ), Mary Bertholf (2, b. NJ), and Francis Goeble (50, b. Germany, laborer.)⁷
     In the 1880 census, John (76, b. NJ, grandfather, retired farmer) is living in Paterson with his grandson John B. Bartholf (25, b. NJ, painter), his wife Mary (26, b. MA), their son John W (1, b. NJ); as well as Sophia Bartholf (46, b. NY, mother.)⁸

     John Bartine was born on 15 August 1712 ((old style.)¹) He died on 26 August 1815.¹

     John's father was brought to this country by his mother when he was an infant. They came about 1680 from New Rochelle, France, at the suspension of the Edict of Nantes. The mother and child lived in NYC for a year when they joined other Huguenots who had fled to America and settled in New Rochelle, NY. As an adult the son came to NYC and lived in one of three cottages east of a strem that ran through Broad St. His former garden is now Harrison Square.¹
