Rachel Smith was the widow of Joshua Miller, a Revolutionary patriot killed in the war by the Smith Gang.
Joshua helped save Capt. Francis Smith during Rev. War. Later, a band of outlaws loyal to the Crown, who terrorized Orange Co. during War, showed up near Joshua Miller's home. Joshua fled to a hiding place in the rocks near his home where he spent the night. In the morning his wife, Rachel Smith Miller, brought him his breakfast, then retruned home. As she entered the house she heard the sound of gun fire and knew her husband had been murdered. In 1781 she married her second husband James Rumsey.
Capt. Smith was in charge of the Woodbury Clove Co. of Continental Militia in Rev. War. At the battle of Fort Montgomery Capt. Smith was severely wounded but saved from capture by John Weygant and Joshua Miller, NCOs, who carried Capt Smith on their backs 12 miles to his home in Woodbury. Married name: Miller.
