     Betsey Josselyn Barstow was born on 30 July 1815 at Rochester, MA, (the part of Rochester that became Mattapoisett (birth also recorded in Pembroke, MA.)¹) She married Benjamin R. Gifford, son of William Gifford and Sarah Sampson, on 10 January 1832 at Rochester, MA.¹ Betsey Josselyn Barstow died on 28 August 1891 at 7 Lafayette St., Fairhaven, MA, (probably.)¹ She was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven.¹

     Calvin Barstow was born on 26 July 1791 at Pembroke, MA.¹ He married Betsey Josselyn, daughter of Jabez Josselyn and Huldah Man, on 7 August 1814 at Pembroke, MA.¹ Calvin Barstow died on 1 July 1873 at Mattapoisett, MA.¹ He was buried in New Cemetery in Mattapoisett, now Cushing Cemetery, near Mendell's Corner.¹

     James Barstow was born circa 1759 at Pembroke, MA.¹ He was baptized on 15 July 1759 at Pembroke, MA, (First Unitarian Church.)¹ He married Sarah Levitt, daughter of John Levitt and Ruth Keen, on 13 December 1781 at Pembroke, MA.¹ James Barstow died on 23 September 1856 at Kingston Landing, MA, He died 23 Sep 1815, aged 56, 'in a sudden and awful manner, by the fall of a plank from a stage of a ship on which he was at work at Kingston Landing, MA, in the great gale of 23 Sept. 1815' Note- death record found in Pembroke, MA v.r.¹ He was buried in Barlow Cemetery in Mattapoisett.¹

     He was born in that part of Scituate that would become Hanover, MA. His death was found recorded in Pembroke, MA, aged 75 yrs., 28 days.¹

     Ruth Keen Barstow was born circa 1794 at Pembroke, MA, (possibly, or in Hanover; no record found however.)¹ She married Elijah Souther Ewell, son of Gershom Ewell and Hannah Souther, on 29 October 1815 at Pembroke, MA.¹ Ruth Keen Barstow died on 19 February 1870 at her home at Fulton St., Medford, MA.¹ She was buried in Cross Street Cemetery in Medford, Bodies and stones removed to Oak Grove Enclosure in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, MA in 1958.¹

     Garret C Bartholf was born circa 12 December 1833 at Hackensack, NJ.^1,4 He married Sophia Van Horn.⁴ Garret C Bartholf died on 3 September 1870 at Hackensack, NJ.^1,4,3 He was buried in NY Cemetery (Maple Grove) in Hackensack, Plot 267-A.^1,4

     Garret C Bartholf was a Civil War veteran.¹ The 1870 census lists Garret C Bartholf and Sophia, with two children: John (14, b. NJ) and Leah (4, b. NJ). Garrit is 35, b. NJ, retired; Sopia is 37, b. NJ. They are in the same house, but different family as John and Leah Burthulf (both 67, b. NJ) John is a retired farmer.² Name variation: Burthulf.²

     The 1870 census lists Richard A Doremus and Jane C at New Barbadoes Township, NJ, with (all b. NJ) John R (27, RR laborer), Leah (6), George (22, Iriner?), William S. (19, clerk in store), Eliza Jane (15, at home). Richard is 52, laborer; Jane is 48, keeping house.⁴ Married name: Doremus.

John is 46, b. NJ, farmer; Leah is 46, b. NY. They are enumerated just after Garrett Bertholf (60, b. NJ, farmer) with Cornelius (18, b. NJ); and just before Abraham Bertholf (52, b. NJ, farmer) with Jane (50, b. NJ), Sarah Ann Bolton (16, b. NJ) and Peter Mabie (22, b. NJ, laborer.)⁶ The 1860 census lists John Bartholf and Leah at Hackensack Township, NJ, with Garrit Bertholf (26, b. NY, farmer) and his wife Sophia (22, b. NJ), and two children, both b. NJ: John (5) and Sophia (2 mo); and John Cosine (55, b. NY, hatter). JOhn is 57, b. NJ, farmer; Leah is 57, b. NY. They are enumerated right after Abraham Bertholf (62, b. NJ, farmer), his wife Jane (62, b. NJ) with Margaret Banta (72, b. NJ, widow), and Peter (30, laborer) and Jane (28, servant) Cissine, both b. Ireland; and right before Cornelius Bertholf (26, b. NJ, farmer), his wife Rachel (22, b. NJ), Mary Bertholf (2, b. NJ), and Francis Goeble (50, b. Germany, laborer.)⁷
     In the 1880 census, John (76, b. NJ, grandfather, retired farmer) is living in Paterson with his grandson John B. Bartholf (25, b. NJ, painter), his wife Mary (26, b. MA), their son John W (1, b. NJ); as well as Sophia Bartholf (46, b. NY, mother.)⁸

     John Bartine was born on 15 August 1712 ((old style.)¹) He died on 26 August 1815.¹

     John's father was brought to this country by his mother when he was an infant. They came about 1680 from New Rochelle, France, at the suspension of the Edict of Nantes. The mother and child lived in NYC for a year when they joined other Huguenots who had fled to America and settled in New Rochelle, NY. As an adult the son came to NYC and lived in one of three cottages east of a strem that ran through Broad St. His former garden is now Harrison Square.¹

     Mary Bartine was born in 1736.¹ She married Johannis Van Tassel, son of Johannes Van Tassel and Anna Ecker.¹ Mary Bartine died in 1825.¹

     Johannis Van Tassel and Mary lived at Tarrytown, NY, in a log house 1 mile north of Sleepy Hollow Church.¹ Married name: Van Tassel.
