Jane was born circa 1811 at New Jersey.1 She married Jacob May Jr., son of Jacob May and Susannah Straut.2

Sarah J (15 in 1870 census).2 The 1850 census lists Jacob May Jr. and Jane at Pompton Township, Passaic County, NJ, with Jacob W (16, laborer), Catherine M (12), John (10), Ellen E (6), and Manamu (1). Jacob is 45, b. NY, laborer, he is listed with the previous household; Jane is 39, she and the children b. NJ.3 The 1855 census lists Jacob May Jr. and Jane at Warwick, Orange County, NY, with seven children, all b. NJ, except the youngest: Jacob W (21), Catherine M (17), John (14), Ellen E (11), Mary A (6), Susanna (3), and Sarah J (4 mo, b. Orange County). Jacob is 46, b. NYC, laborer; Jane is 44, b. NJ.1
They are possibly in the 1860 census in Pompton Township, NJ, with two daughters: Susan (7) and Sally (5, b. NJ), but the ages seem to be off: Jacob is 45 (b. 1815, NY), team driver; Jane is 43; Susan and Jane prob. b. NY, but not indicated. Sally could be the same as Sarah J in 1870.4 The 1870 census lists Jacob May Jr. and Jane at Ramapo Twp, Rockland County, NY, with John J (28, b. NJ, farm laborer), and Sarah J (15, b. NJ). Jacob is 64, b. NY, laborer; Jane is 59, b. NY. They are next door to Walter W May and family.5 The 1875 census lists Jane at Ramapo Twp, NY, with two daughters: Sarah J (18, single, b. Rockland County) and Susan (20, widowed, b. NJ, house servant), and a grandson Jesse D Mariner (age unclear, indexed as 10, b. Rockland County). Jane is 63, b. NJ, widowed, washer woman.6 The 1880 census lists Jane, with her son John J (36, b. NJ, widowed, works in brickyard, father b. NY, mother b. NJ) and grandson Jesse Marender (8, b. NY, father b. NY, mother b. NJ). Jane is 70, b. NJ, widowed, father b. NY, mother b. NJ.7 Married name: May.
