John Fletcher Tuers Sr was an actor and comedian.
His second wife was born in England, and died in Santa Barbara, CA. The date of the 3rd is recollection of notice from the San Francisco newspaper by the mother of the compiler of the source data. His third wife was born in Bridgeton, near Glasgow, Scotland, and died in San Francisco (Death Certificate in Barbara Wills file.)2
As a working actor, Johnny moved almost every year. He worked as a comedian at Theater Comiqe, with Buckley's Variety, and as a minstral at Bella Union Melodeon. The Bella Union was one of many on the Barbary Coast that were also called concert saloons, but were in reality low variety and music halls. Among them in addition to the Bella Union, were the Olympic, the Pacific, Bert's New Idea Melodeon, the Adelphi, and Gilbert's Melodeon. They catered to stag audiences only, and occasionally offered very ambitious programs, but their performances, while coarse and vulgar and presented with what the Gilbert's advertisements called "freedom from constrained etiquette," were not particularly obscene. In these places there was no dancing. They charged admission, ranging from a bit, or twelve and one-half cents, to fifty cents, and their revenue was derived solely from this source and from the sale of liquor. They employed no pretty waiter girls, and discouraged drugging and robbery upon their premises. As elsewhere on the Coast, however, the female performers were required to sell drinks between their appearances on the stage, and in the curtained boxes which were a feature of each house they were permitted to do whatever in their judgment might persuade a reluctant customer to buy. In this setting John had his ups and downs, as most working actors do in their career. His most notorius moment may have come on 31 Jan 1873 when the newspapers of the day, among them the Stockton Daily Independent, reported: "James Dowling, for many years connected with the theatrical profession in California, mortally shot by Johnny Tuers, who was engaged in a scuffle with George Howard." Family members report that John Fletcher was working as a bouncer at the time.
For more on the Barbary Coast, see , taken from Asbury, Herbert. The Barbary Coast. 1933: New York. or Wikipedia at
According to the San Jose, Santa Clara 1870 Census, John owned real estate valued at $3500.

John Jasper Tuers

M, b. 1832
FatherCornelius Tuers1 b. c 1790, d. b 1850
MotherEllen1 b. c 1798
John Jasper Tuers was born in 1832 at Newark, Essex County, NJ, (1860 census has birthplace as New York.)1,2 He married Delia Jane Hennion, daughter of Ezekiel Baldwin Hennion Sr and Jane Fowler.

Family

Delia Jane Hennion b. 18 Mar 1835, d. bt 1885 - 1895
Children
The 1860 census lists John J Tuers and Delia at Newark (12th Ward), Essex County, NJ, with heir children Matilda, Cornelius and Maria.2 John Jasper Tuers was an Oilcloth Manufacturer (1880 census); Jappaner (in other census); Varnish (in his death certificate.) The 1885 census lists John J Tuers and Delia J at Newark (12th Ward), NJ, with Hattie M, John J and Herman F. Cornelius Tuers (20-60) is listed in the same house, but a separate household.3 The 1895 census lists John Tuers at Newark (5th Ward), NJ, with John and Herman (20-60), and in the same house Elmira (M, 20-60) and Emma (F, 20-60.)4
John first appears in records in the 1850 Census Newark, NJ, in the household of Ellen Tuers. Age is approximate, birth dates vary from 1829-1832. Birthplace given as NY and NJ in different Census.
We know that Delia Hennion married a John J Tuers, and that both families were possibly from Morris County. Working with a direct descendant of Cornelius Tuers, we are quite certain that John Jasper Tuers is the correct name of Delia Hennion's husband, and we know that his father's name was Cornelius. However, we have not proven that we have correctly linked John Jasper to this Cornelius. Both names appear in both Newark Census and Newark directories. Ages and locations support a correlation, but we have found no primary records to support our postulation.
Rather than omit these families, we have chosen to show this Parent/Child link in the hopes that we may find additional records that will help us prove a correct line, allowing a link with which we can provide subsequent family groups.
Children's names are taken from 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census, Newark, Essex, NJ. Also living with the family in 1880 were: Mary Barries (age 22, servant), her child Carrie A (age 1), and Cellia Leimons (age 25, servant)
In various census, John J Tuers occupation is listed as "Jappaner". This is a 19th century term for someone who varnishes wooden furniture with a hard brilliant coat of hard lacquer. Invented in Japan.
Jim Turse, July 2010.1 Name variation: John J Tuers.5

He went to California in 1850 to start an oyster business in the San Francisco Bay area, and settled in Santa Clara County. He made the trip west with his son John, leaving other children in the care of his mother, Eleanor (Van Winkle) Tuers. As an odd and interesting side note, Eleanor later married BF Welsh, father-in-law of Joseph's first wife Gertrude Welsh.
December 4, 1847, Joseph Tuers, of Jersey City, registered a patent for a device for the improvement of Boats in sailing. (Source: Scientific American Volume 0003 Issue 13 (December 18, 1847), page 100.)

Joseph Samuel Tuers was in 1862 a blacksmith.
Joseph Tuers is the 2nd great grandfather of Richard Mann.

Marriage certificate of his daughter held by Richard Mann
National Archives information has supplied everything except for his name. Civil War pension was applied for 3/5/1907 per the Act of 2/6/1907. Mann holds a copy of the application and the Act. The application shows that he was 79 at the time of the application and it was witnessed by Edward Kimble and Peter G Speer who stated they knew him for 20 years. The Notary who signed the application was Henry Speer of Upper Montclair, NJ.
Enlistment papers show that he enlisted in the Army in Paterson, NJ on 9/1/1862. He was a Private in K Company, 25th Regiment, NJ Volunteers. He was discharged 6/20/1863 in Beverly, NJ. He is shown as being 5' 91/2" tall with blue eyes and sandy hair. His occupation at the time of enlistment was blacksmith. I have a copy of his service records dated 6/22/1889. His preliminary pension application dated 3/18/1898 showed his wife's name, marriage date and location and the names living children with names and birth dates. The minister that performed the marriage was Rev Domine Bogardus. The widows application shows the date of death but not the year. Based on the Widow's Act the year could have been 1907 or 1908. I have used 1908 because it appears they were very quick about taking advantage of the pensions when they were approved.
The location of the burial is from the cemetery information. They show the cause of death as a Fistula. He was living in the Soldier's Home at the time of his death.

Civil War pension was applied for in 5 Mar 1907 (2nd great granson, Richard Mann, holds copies). Witnesses were Edward Kimble and Peter G Speer, who knew him for over 20 years. He enlisted in Paterson, Nj on 1 Sep 1862. At the time of enlistment, he was 5 feet, 9 inches tall, had blue eyes and sandy hair.

He was living in the Soldiers Home at the time of his pension application and death.
DATE BET 1862 AND 1863
PLAC Private, Civil War, K Company, 25th Regiment, NJ Volunteers
RES 1863 to 1895 Passaic Co, NJ
RES 1895 to 1908 Essex Co, NJ.
Information is from Joseph Tuers' application for Civil War pension dated 3/18/1898.
Date of death and location of burial are from the cemetery. The show the cause of death as Uremic Coma - Hypertophy of Prostate.
1900 Census lists John Henry living with Joseph S. and Lydia in Montclair Twp, Essex, NJ
1920 Census lists John living with brother David and his wife Rhoda in Montclair
UNPROVEN - Children's birth dates are suspect. May have the wrong parent.
