Early Granger was born in 1790 at Norfolk, England. He was baptized on 27 September 1792 at Shelfanger, Norfolk, England, (All Saints.)3 He married Mary Dougherty on 3 June 1816 at Liverpool, Lancashire, England.1 Early Granger died on 19 August 1883 at Jamaica, Queens County, NY, The Granger Genealogy has his place of death as Brooklyn.4,1 He was buried on 21 August 1883 in Greenwood Cemetery, Lot 5546, Sec 44.

The 1850 census lists Early Granger and Mary at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, with their children Robert, Mary, Guph, Alfred and Charles (indexed as Earlie Grangire.)5 The 1880 census lists Early Granger at Jamaica, Queens County, NY, with the family of his son-in-law and daughter Daniel B Hendrickson and Mary Hendrickson, and their children James, Benjamin, Mary, Daniel and Charles and James' wife Mary E; as well as a granddaughter Mary (3 mo, prob. James' child.)6
Early Granger was a veteran of Waterloo, most likely having served in the Norfolk 54th Regiment of Foot. He served under Captain George Black and was the recipient of the Waterloo Medal. The Waterloo Medal was given to all soldiers who fought at the battles of Ligny, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo in June of 1815. It was the first campaign medal ever issued by the British Army. (copy of discharge on file)
Most of the men in the family were noted for their mason skills. Early Sr. was credited for building the brick housing for the Navy Yard's first boiler, probably sometime in the late 1830s.
"On July 12, 1880 a birthday surprise party was held at the residence of his son-in-law, Daniel B. Hendricks, at Springfield, Long Island. Mr. Granger was born in Norfolk, England and served several years in the English Army. He fought at Waterloo. He emigrated to the United States in 1830. He organized the first brass band in Brooklyn in 1835. This band is now known as the 47th Regiment Band. After dinner the party assembly adjourned to the barn where the floor was prepared for dancing. Mr. Granger himself danced a hornpipe and sang a song, showing himself able to carry his many years with gaiety, grace, and a hearty cheerfulness." (excerpt Brooklyn Eagle 12 June 1880)
We hold a tattered and worn copy of Early Granger's discharge papers. It and the baptism dates correlate regarding his birth date being 1792, however this varies with later records holding his birth date to be about 1790.7

Francis S Granger was a grocery Clerk.
The 1880 Federal Census lists F.S. Granger's occupation as "clerk in grocery store". But, the immigration and travel for Frank Granger, also listed as F Granger and F.S. Granger, shows four arrivals from Hamilton, Bermuda, and one arrival from Havana, Cuba between 1869 and 1909. Francis brought his wife Rose, born in Bermuda, home aboard the SS Eliza Barss in June of 1869. The 1900 census lists their marriage as occurring in 1867. Does this mean he lived in Bermuda for two years? Each of the recorded trips lists a different occupation. A mechanic in 1869, printer (?) in 1871, a farmer (?) in 1874, a tailor in 1883 and unreadable in 1909. Records vary slightly on age, but close enough to assume it is the same man.2

He was killed at the Hague Street explosion at the location of A. B. Taylor, Esq., a well known printing press manufacturer in Hague Street, and ST. JOHN, BURR & Co., hat body manufacturers. On site were employed about 130 men and boys. Over 50 of them lost their lives when the boiler in the building exploded, shattering windows for many blocks nearby, and causing the building to collapse. Accounts of the explosion vary, but in summary the accident occurred at half past 7, A.M., by the bursting of a boiler of two hundred horse power, in the Printing Press and Machine shop of MR. A. V. TAYLOR, No. 3, Hague Street, within a door or two of Pearl Street. As soon as the explosion took place, the whole building, which was five stories high, was actually lifted from its foundation to a height of six feet; and when it reached that elevation, it tumbled down, crushing amid the ruins a great many people. The exact number we have not yet been able to ascertain. So great was the force of the explosion that fragments of the building were scattered in every direction. Windows in the neighborhood were broken, and a large portion of the front wall of the building was thrown with tremendous force into the houses opposite. Various opinions are afloat in regard to the cause of the explosion, but the most generally received opinion is, that the boiler was imperfect. The proprietors state that it was a new boiler, and that the exceedingly cold frost during the night froze several water lines and caused it to explode when it was fired up this morning. As nearly as can be ascertained, there were a hundred or more persons at the time of the catastrophe scattered through the machine-shop and pattern factory, as well as a bindery, in which a great many men and girls were usually employed.

John Granger made a will in September 1865. In his will drawn in September 1865, he notes two other daughters, Susan and Harriet, for which we hold no record exept Marie Velardi's unpublished Register for John Granger:
Mary was born out of wedlock to John and Elizabeth Cobb. We hold a bastardy record from Occold Parish in Suffolk dated 1808, for John Granger to pay support for the maintenance of a female child born to Elizabeth Cobb. Occold lies about 12 miles south of Shelfanger. This John Granger is the son of William Granger and Mary Holmes; Early's older brother. Shelfanger All Saints parish records show that John married Elizabeth in 1811. Three more children were later born to them, John, Early, and Emily. Baptism records only exist for Emily at Shelfanger Particular Baptist. Elizabeth died in 1820.
There is no record of this child coming to America with John and his family in 1830. There are, however, census records of a Mary Granger, born 1808, living in Diss. She shows up in the 1841, 1851, and 1861 censuses, never married, claiming to be born in Shelfanger. She died in 1866. Everett Granger holds copy of death certificate.
Banns were posted for the marriage of John Granger (wid) to Lois Barker (wid) 19 May, 26 May, 2 June 1822, but apparently there was no marriage in 1822 since banns were again posted 9 Dec, 16 Dec, and 23 Dec with marriage being recorded 27 Dec 1827.3,4,5
