Geurt Coerten made a will on 5 February 1671. He was Guert Coerten, from Voorthuysen in Guelderlant, now living at Bergen. Annulled his previous wills (15 Jan 1657, with his wife Geertje Jacobs Dueunaers, because she has been unfaithful; also 24 Mar 1664); names the son of his sister, Pieter Hesselse; brother? Thomas Jurriaens, oldest son of Ryckje Harmens; Matthys Hendricksen Smack, son of Geurtje Harmens, his brother's daughter; Jan Harmensen, his brother's son; Christyntje Claes, daughter of Claas Christiansen; brother Harmen Coerten, universal heir.4,5
Konight has another note with Guert "Will NJ 1:101," but not found online. Guert Coerten of Gemoenepa is mentioned on 1 Apr 1661 as leasing a lot to Jacob Lube (HSYB 1900:132); He is also mentioned as neighbor in various deeds (NJA, vol.XXI.)

The Courter FGS has Guert as a son of Jan Harmensen (Jan Harmensen Coerten), marrying in Pompton Plains in 1690; but this is probably wrong. The timing is too tight. Pompton Plains Church Records do not start until 1737. BC-Families has Gerrit Courter (m. 1685 Willemtje Pieters), see Gerrit Coerten van Voorhees (son of Coert Stevense Van Voorhis). I wonder whether the date of 1 Jan 1690 is actually an estimated date, based on Peter's birth year. But the marriage is in Pompton Plains in 1690, and in Amersfort (Brooklyn) in 1685, but as said before, Pompton Plains Church Records do not start until 1737.3

Guertje Coerten and Hendrick had one more daughter Aertje or Erlee, acc. to Konight and BC-Familes. Courter had a number of unnamed, undated children.6,1,7
Konight FGS has Johannes Swart, husband of Rebecca Smack, remarrying with his mother-in-law Guertje Coerten at New Utrecht at some point. BC-Families Smack File has Guertje Coerten as widow of a Johannes Swart when she married Hendrik Smack. Both seem unlikely: Geertje was b c. 1653, and her first daughter marries in 1685, which is problematic as well, as in that case both must have been 16 at marriage.
Johannes died in 1744, by which time his mother-in-law was long dead. Hendrick Smack survived his wife, acc. to BC-Families.2,7,8 Name variation: Geertje Harmens Coerten.3 Name variation: Geurtje Harmans. Married name: Smack. Married name: Swart.

Myndert Coerten1

M, d. before 22 February 1706/7
Myndert Coerten was from Aernhem when he married.1 He married Marya Pieters, daughter of Pieter Pia and Maria Petit, on 9 January 1660 at New York City (DRC) (He was Meynart Courten, Soldier, from Aernhem; she Maria Pieters, jd from Amsterd. in N. Nederlt.)1,2 Myndert Coerten died before 22 February 1706/7.3,4

Family

Marya Pieters b. 19 Apr 1643

Myndert Coerten made a will on 25 October 1704. It was probated 22 Feb 1706/7. He mentions his daughter Hannah, and her son Coerten Andreas; his daughter Maria; his daughter Wyntje, and her son Myndert Lafavour, and Wyntjes mother Maria Coerten. It also mentions "a house built for Hendrick."3
Myndert Coerten's will mentions a daughter Hannah, who apparently married an Andries, as her son is Coert Andreas; it does not mention Hendrickje Meinderts, who did marry Andries Jansen. There is no baptism for a Coert, son Andries and Hanna or Hendrickje. Is Hendrickje really Hannah?3
     From Riker:
Meyndert Coerten, from Arnhem, came out as a soldier of the West India Co. He married in 1660 a girl of PIcard parentage, Maria, daughter of Pierre Pia; and visited Holland, returning the next year in the ship with Muyden, who probably drew him to H. He leased land of De Meyer. Coerten went to Flushing, and then to New Utrecht, where he served as an elder. High sheriff under Leisler, and one of his council, but his devotion to that party cost him a long imprisonment. He died on his farm c. 1706.
For his children, see Bergen Gen. 1st Ed (it is not in the 2nd edition, as later evidence changed the opinion, that he was of the Van Voorhees family.)4,5
