John Van Buiten immigrated in 1888 (but he married in Holland, so this is not right.)1 The 1910 census lists John Van Buiten and Gertrude at 293 North 8th Street at Prospect Park Borough, Passaic County, NJ, with six children: John (16), Jacob (13), Jerry (10), Nicholas (6), Grace (3), Garry (2) and a boarder Lottie Udes (23.)3
John was a contractor, and build the buildings that were occupied by the Century Woven Label Company Mills in Prospect Park, which were in February 1918 destroyed by fire. The fire departments of Prospect Park, Haledon and Paterson battled the blaze, but lack of water frustrated their efforts. The mill had been build in 1917, and the damage was estimated at $15.000, not including machinery and goods. A number of houses was also destroyed, damages there were $8000.-. The cause of the fire is unknown, but an investigation will be conducted.4 The 1920 census lists John Van Buiten and Gertrude at 347 North 8th Street at Prospect Park Borough, Passaic County, NJ, with seven children: Jacob (22), Jerry (19), Nicholas (16), Grace (12), Garry (11), Albert (8) and Gertrude (5), a daughter-in-law Elizabeth (26) with her daughter Gertrude ( 3 + 9 mo.)5
