Charles E is born in New York, Harry, William, and Maria in Brooklyn. They are also enumerated in Brooklyn (as Rivers.)³ The 1865 census lists Charles A Rivers and Mary at Ward 3 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, with his children Chas., Harry, William and Mary (resp. 8, 6, 4, and 1, all b. Brooklyn), and a servant Mary Landers (30, b. Ireland). Charles and his wife are listed as b. in Dutchess Cty, NY. They are also enumerated in Rockland COunty (as Howell.)⁴ The 1870 census lists Charles A Howell and Maria H at Clarkstown, NY, with Charles A, Harvey F, William P, Maria A, Irene and Martin E (resp. 13, 11, 6, 5, 3, and 1 yr old), and John D Phillips and Harriet Phillips (71 and 62yr.)⁵ Charles A Howell was a prof./teacher of Dancing.^5,6 The 1875 census lists Charles Howell and Maria at Clarkstown, NY, with their children Charles A, Harvey F, William P, Maria A, Irene, Martin E, Frank A and Fredrick E. Charles and Maria are listed as born in Orange County, Charles Jr. as born in New York, and all the rest of the children as born in Kings County.⁷ The 1880 census lists Charles R Howell and Maria H at ED 48 at New City, Rockland County, NY, with their children Charles A, Harvey F, William P, Maria A, Irene, Eugene M, Frank A and Fredrick E.⁶ The 1892 census lists Charles A Rivers and Mary at Ward 22, ED 21 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, with their children Chas., Harry, William, Mary, Irene, Eugene, Frank O and Frederick C, with the last name Rivers.⁸
     Griffin reports an obituary, but does not provide a paper.
