According to the Descendants of Jan Zaborowski, Johannes Goetchius, son of Rachel Zabriske and John Hendrick Goetchius, was born 1 July 1751 and chr 21 July 1751 at Schraalenburgh. The article says he may have lived in New Paltz or Rockland Co, NY as has been claimed, but this is doubtful. He lived in the Glen Rock area of the Old Saddle River Twp. He owned land in the Garfield area. In 1827 he helped found the 2nd Reformed Church of Totowa (later Paterson, NJ) and was chosen Elder at the time. He died in 1828 according to records of the church. His will was dated 8 May 1826 and proved 12 Mar 1828. In it he mentioned his wife Hannah, sons John (dec), Henry, Jacob, Daus. Polly, Rachel (dec), Sally Peggy Hannah, Elizabeth and Hetty; grandchildren John, Hetty Rachel and Catherine all children of Rachel; Lands mentioned were some along the Passaic River.
He married Annetje Dedite (One record said he married Maria Decker; another says Hannah Decker of New Paltz, but nothing found indicates the correctness of Decker, although the spellings could be for Decker. She is lited in his will in 1827 but not in the church records with him in 1827.
Children of Johannes Goetchius and Annetje Dedite are listed as Maria, chr 7 Jan 1775 at Paramus, m Jacobus Doremus; Hendrick b 7 Feb 1776; John m Jannetje Ackerman; Rachel m Egbert Bruyn; Hendrick, chr 4 Nov 1780 at Schraalenburgh, married Sarah VanBussum; Margaret b 27 Nov 1782, chr at Hackensack, m John Marinus, Jr; Sarah, b 18 Feb 1785, chr at Kakiat, NY, m Johannes Post and Richard Banta; Hannah m 22 Sep 1811 at Passaic, John J. Family 3 | Magdalena Christie b. 18 Nov 1747 |
NOTE: While there seems to be quite a bit of confusion about his birth date, "The Goetschi Family" by Ruth Heidgard has the date as 4 March 1718 and the place as Berneck, with a transcription of the baptismal register. He is 17 yrs old in 1735, when he arrives (or takes the oath of allegiance.)2,28 John Hendrick Goetchius was named as executor in Rachel Zabriskie's will dated 4 April 1771.29
From Holmes File:
We are descended from John Hendrick (Henry) Goetchius. His granddaughter Hannah Goetchius married Edwin FitzRandolph. Family history has John Hendrick parents as Mauritus Goetchius and Esther Werndtlin. John Henry Goetchius was born in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland about 1714. The History of Hudson and Bergen Counties says he was born in Liguria Switzerland in 1718 and came to America with his father in 1728. He preached on Long Island until he came to Hackensack, NJ and preached there until 1748 when he took charge of the Church at Schraalenburgh where he preached until his death in 1774.
The history of the Zabriske family states Rachel Zabriske was married to Rev Johan Hendrick Goetchius, son of Maurice Goetchius and Esther Werndtlin, 26 Aug 1750 at Hackensack. It says he was the storm center of the Reformed Churches from the day he landed in Philadelphia in 1735 until his death 14 Nov 1774. When he came to Philadelphia with his father, who died upon arrival, he became the boy-wonder preacher of the area covering about 20 churches, all without legal ordination.
In 1741 he became legally ordained by Dorsius, Frelinghuysen and the Presbyterian Tenant to test the requirement that all theological candidates must return to Holland for ordination. In his first parish in Jamaica, Long Island, his ordination was challanged. Word from Holland was slow and a result the delay resulted in a breach between the conservative party and liberal coetus. In 1748, he was vindicated by Dutch officials, and he moved to Bergen County. Here in addition to serving his parishioners, he tutored young men for the ministry. Eventually his theological students became the nucleus of Queens College, now Rutgers University. He became one of its first trustees (Info from Ruth Heigard of New Paltz, NY). He married Anna Holman and Magdelena Christie. He was buried in the south Schraalenburgh Reformed Church with his first wife, Rachel Zabriske.
Information about his relationship with Rutgers and Rev War may be found in United Churches of Hackensack and Schraalenburgh and America Revolution in the Hackensack Valley.1 Name variation: Rev.
