He is 59, a farmer of 13 acres, b in Kirk Newton; wife Margaret, age 59, b in Tweedmouth; son John age 23 road laborer, son William age 26, tailor; Margaret age 16, children all born in Norham. The address was either Birchall or Brickall.⁵ The 1861 census lists George Short and Margaret, with their granddaughter Isabella (b. Ford?). He is 67, turnpike laborer, b Newton; Margaret, wife age 68 b Tweedmouth.⁶ George Short was a road contractor.⁴ The 1871 census lists George Short and Margaret at Swinton, Northumberland, England.⁷ His parents were Leonard Short and Isabella Morton.
