John came to America from England as a servant to Thomas Spicer, a Quaker, and married the daughter Anne in 1649. He had matriculated at Oxford in 1634 and his older brother Daniel supplied money that provided for his migration to New Amsterdam. NJ, farmer; Ann is 23, b. NJ.4 The 1860 census lists John Lake and Catherine at Franklin Township, NJ, with, all b. NJ: Margaret (5), James (3), and John (10m) Lake; and Elizabeth Van Winkle (50). John is 38, b. NJ, no occupation listed; Catherine is 36, b. NJ. In the same house, but different family are Courtland Lake (62, b. NJ, master carpenter) and Charity Lake (52, b. NJ). The children from the first marriage are living with Henry J Hopper.2 The 1870 census lists John Lake and Catherine at Franklin Township, NJ, with, all b. NJ: Margaret (15), James (12), John (8), and Eliz (5) Lake. John is 48, b. NJ, farmer; Catherine is 47, keeps house. His son William is living with Henry J Hopper.5
