Joe, May, John, and Ben sailed to Melbourne, Australia on the SS Asturias, 3/2/1949 Much more about this vessel can be found at , including the passenger list showing the full names of Goodman family members. Master of the Vessel for this voyage - Wannister
More than one and a half million Britons left for Australia in the quarter century following the Second World War. The Goodman family took advantage of the incentives to emigrate, and joined the largest migration from Europe in the modern era.
The SS Asturias made 23 trips to Australia between 1946 and 1952, carrying more than 20,000 migrants. Most of them came under an assisted passage scheme through which adults travelled to Australia for just £10 whilst children travelled free. Many children were brought to Australia as 'orphans' to find new homes.
The trip from the UK to Australia when SS Asturias served as a 'migrant ship' took approximately 5-6 weeks. According to the "Instructions for the Voyage", passengers were allowed to take with them no more than £6 in UK currency, and up to £10 Sterling "in Australian or other currency notes .... making a combined total equal to £16 Sterling for use on board.... which may not be spent at ports abroad."
The route from Southampton varied, with some voyages via the Suez Canal, Aden and Colombo and others via Karachi and Bombay to Fremantle, Western Australia.

According to notes in his handwritten biographical sketch, John Henry (Jack) Goodman sailed aboard the Allen Line ship "SS Tunisian" embarking from Liverpool, England 25 August 1910. The Tunisian was a primary carrier of British Home Children. These children were forced to emigrate from England, and then bound to work for Canadian families - a practice which went on across the Commonwealth until the early 1960's. Jack was not one of these children, but received a letter in England from John Price, a school friend who had gone to Canada as a child, and offered to assist him to travel to Canada, sending him a ticket for travel from Liverpool to Quebec aboard the SS Tunisian. Jack arrived in Quebec on 2 September. He worked as a farm laborer in Canada for a year. He left Canada via train on 7 September 1911, to arrive in Brooklyn, New York where he found work as a shipping clerk. (See My Life Time by John Henry Goodman, transcribed by Jim Turse & Cindy Goodman Turse. The original is held by Janet Goodman Chapman, Mystic, CT) While in Brooklyn, he met and courted Jessie Irene Truss, the sister of George Truss, a fellow Englishman he befriended and met with a couple of times each week after work.

His WW I Draft Registration Card on June 5, 1917 lists him as living at 9 Reynolds Hill, Mystic, CT while employed by Mr. Albert Haley as a gardener in Mystic. He is described as medium in build with grey eyes and brown hair.6
