The 1870 census lists John P Crispell and Gertrude, with Benjamin Crispell, 20 yrs old, farm laborer.²
The Crispell File had Benjamin Crispell as a son of John P Crispell, probably based on the 1870 census, where Benjamin lives with John. If so, he cannot be a son of Gertrude, and there has to be another marriage. However, in 1860 and 1850, Benjamin is living with Benjamin Gerret Newkirk. He is the only Crispell in the household, which makes it likely that his parents were either not married, or both died shortly after his birth. In the 1865 NY census, Benjamin (15 y.o.) is living with Charles D. Newkirk as a servant.^3,4
