     Wes grew up and graduated from the Newark Schools, including Newark High School in 1901. He was quite athletic and excelled in basketball, football and various track events.
Wes married Mary Elizabeth Hawley in 1908. They lived at 77 High Street in Glen Ridge, NJ before moving to 278 Bay Avenue, Glen Ridge. Later they moved to Winston-Salem, NC, then to an apartment at 189 Liberty Street, Bloomfield, NJ.
'C. Wesley Vreeland has been identified with the banking business during the early part of his career. Starting in 1901 he began with the Seaboard National Bank, where he advanced through and to the head of several departments. In 1919 he resigned to take a postion with the City National Bank of New York to specialize in Foreign Exchange. In 1923 hewas elected Cashier of the Seventh National Bank of New York, from which bank he resigned in 1928 to become the Executive Vice President and Director of the Seward National Bank of New York. Mr. Vreeland was Director of the American Financial Corporation of New York, First American Bancorporation and International Bankstocks Corporation before becoming President of the Peoples National Bank of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was well known throughout the bankingfield.'
Aftera bank failure in North Carolina Wes returned to NJ and associated himself with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company.
Wes and Mary were living in Bloomfield when he was taken ill with his fatal pneumonia. He was hospitalized for five days at Presbyterian Hospital, Newark, NJ where he succumbed to his illness. His condition could not at that time be typed and no antibiotics were available to civilians during the war years.
His death was reported by Massachucettes Mutual Insurance Co. as:'Death of a Newark representative; C. Wesley Vreeland, a prominent memberof our Newark agency and one of the Company's leading producers, died suddenly of pneumonia on November 24. He was fifty-nine years old and had been writing insurance for the Massachusettes Mutual since 1937. At various times his picture has appeared in 'The Congratulator' indicating that he was one of the monthly leaders in the entire field, and at the time of his death he stood twentieth on our 100 Leaders' Bulletin. His sudden passing will be deeply felt by his many Home Office friends and by his associates in Newark, to whom we extend our sincere sympathy.'

'His auction sales always attracted large numbers and brought good returns because he mixed his sales talks with quaint good humor, a native wit of repartee, which has always been inimitable.²'

He was Claes Hertmanse Vreeland, ym, from Gemonepa; she Annetje Hansen, yd, from N. Utrecht, L.I. Rec'd cert. May 24.)⁸ Claas Vreeland (2) married Elsie Pieters, daughter of Pieter Hessels and Lysbeth Gerrits, on 19 August 1699.^1,9,10,11 (Banns on 6 August 1699 at Bergen, NJ. He was Claes Hertmans (wid. of Annetje Hermans); she Elsje Pieters, yd; rec'd cert. 19 Aug to Hackensack.)¹¹ Claas Vreeland died between 27 April 1757 and October 1757.¹²

     Claas Vreeland made a will on 27 April 1754. It was proved 24 Oct 1757 (Abstr. of Wills Vol III p343). DeWitt has the date of probate as 25 Oct 1757.^13,14,9 Claas was a member of the Acquackanonk Church in 1725 and was a deacon in that church in 1707 and 1713

Deed Book G, page 544, records of Essex County, 'Class Freeland' of Ackuackanonk to Thomas Jurianson, 19 Dec 1728, mentions land of Derrick 'Freeland' adjoining.

In the will of Claes his four sons above are mentioned and three other children are spoken of but their names are not given. His home was near the Third River. See the marriages of Maritje Vreeland and Ab Claesen Gerrebrandse, Garrit Vreeland and Maritje Stijmets (Acq.) Possible they are other children.^1,13,15 Name variation: Nicholas Vreeland.^1,9

     Claas Vreeland was baptized on 30 March 1724 at Jersey City, Hudson County, NJ, (Bergen DRC) (record #490.)^1,2 He (1) married Catlyntje Sip, daughter of Ide Sip and Antje Van Wagoner, on 1 December 1757 at Bergen, NJ, (DRC.)^3,1,4 (Banns on 13 November 1757. He was Klaas Vreland, ym, b. at Gemoenepan; she Cattintje Ziph, yd, b. at Bergen.)³ Claas Vreeland (2) married Antje Basset, daughter of Stephen Bassett and Ann Millidge, on 13 December 1760.¹ (license on 2 November 1760.)⁵ Claas Vreeland died on 9 February 1802.¹

It was probated 28 Aug 1811 (Book A, page 331.)⁵ Claes was appointed administrator of his father's estate on 11 Apr 1760.¹ A Deed (Morris County, Jun 1, 1762) 'Clause' Vreeland, of Pequannock, to John Vreeland mentions his father, Hartman Klause Vreeland.      Claes Vreeland was born at Amsterdam.¹ He married Anna Maria Gerbrants on 14 April 1657 at New York City (DRC.)²

     Some sources (Konight among them) have Claes as a son of Michiel Jansen Vreeland. However, there were no children with him on the ship, so Claes could not have come with him.³
