Wes grew up and graduated from the Newark Schools, including Newark High School in 1901. He was quite athletic and excelled in basketball, football and various track events.
Wes married Mary Elizabeth Hawley in 1908. They lived at 77 High Street in Glen Ridge, NJ before moving to 278 Bay Avenue, Glen Ridge. Later they moved to Winston-Salem, NC, then to an apartment at 189 Liberty Street, Bloomfield, NJ.
'C. Wesley Vreeland has been identified with the banking business during the early part of his career. Starting in 1901 he began with the Seaboard National Bank, where he advanced through and to the head of several departments. In 1919 he resigned to take a postion with the City National Bank of New York to specialize in Foreign Exchange. In 1923 hewas elected Cashier of the Seventh National Bank of New York, from which bank he resigned in 1928 to become the Executive Vice President and Director of the Seward National Bank of New York. Mr. Vreeland was Director of the American Financial Corporation of New York, First American Bancorporation and International Bankstocks Corporation before becoming President of the Peoples National Bank of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was well known throughout the bankingfield.'
Aftera bank failure in North Carolina Wes returned to NJ and associated himself with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company.
Wes and Mary were living in Bloomfield when he was taken ill with his fatal pneumonia. He was hospitalized for five days at Presbyterian Hospital, Newark, NJ where he succumbed to his illness. His condition could not at that time be typed and no antibiotics were available to civilians during the war years.
His death was reported by Massachucettes Mutual Insurance Co. as:'Death of a Newark representative; C. Wesley Vreeland, a prominent memberof our Newark agency and one of the Company's leading producers, died suddenly of pneumonia on November 24. He was fifty-nine years old and had been writing insurance for the Massachusettes Mutual since 1937. At various times his picture has appeared in 'The Congratulator' indicating that he was one of the monthly leaders in the entire field, and at the time of his death he stood twentieth on our 100 Leaders' Bulletin. His sudden passing will be deeply felt by his many Home Office friends and by his associates in Newark, to whom we extend our sincere sympathy.'
