My Grandfather by Robbie Holliday
George MacDonald, my grandfather, was born in Cherryfield, Maine. He liked nothing better than spending a week in the Maine woods with some men. They tapped the maple trees for syrup. Many times his dog would go with him, coming back full of porcupine needles.
He moved to Noank at the age of 21. He went to work at the Robert Palmer shipyard. He did the joiner work on the vessels, such as building pilot houses. He built the railroad floats for the Delaware & Lackawanna Railroad Company to carry trains across the river.
He built some of the first houses at Groton Long Point after the activities of the shipyard ceased.
He had charge of the actual work done on the ship Morgan an old whaler. He had been a ships carpenter for the past forty years. The boat was put in a concrete cradle at the estate of Colonel H. R. Green. Colonel Green wanted to eave the vessel looking as antique as possible, so my grandfather left everything that was safe to walk on untouched. He fixed the mast and deck. The boat was taken to Colonel Green's estate and is not open so that people who wish may go aboard it.
He liked all kinds of animals. He had squirrels, hawks, and raised pheasants. He liked dogs best of all. He trained his dog to go home from the shop and bring back whatever he wanted.
