Fighting Bob Martin was a boxer who lost only one bout out of 60 to Gene Tunney, Bob retired from the ring due to ill health. He was champion of the A.E.F. during the World War and in the International Games in 1919 held in Pershing Stadium in France.
Mary was described as 'charming and altogether lovely.' The engagement and wedding were international news. Mary was a descendant of Col. William Byrd who build 'Westover,' one of the first colonial mansions of Virginia in 1734. The spelling of the name changed during the Revolution when the Byrds were Tories and the Birds cast their lot with the Colonials.1 Name variation: Fighting Bob Martin.1
