On 23/24 Aug 1572, the French monarchy and the catholic church murdered thousands of unarmed Huguenots (Calvinists) in Paris. This is called the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. A painting depicting (celebrating?) this day still hangs in the Vatican. However, the new king Henry IV of France was favorably disposed toward the Huguenots and he issued the Edict of Nantes in 1598 which stated that the Protestants (Huguenots) had rights of any French citizen such as conducting business, holding office, worshipping as desired etc. Somewhere in the period, about a third of the population turned to the protestant way.
In predominantly Catholic France the managers of the corporate church and later kings feared loss of income and power and began to plot against the Huguenots. In 1629 some of the rights were diminished and in 1668 the Edict of Nantes was revoked. A great exodus ensued of the skilled and educated population to escape persecution.
Because of these pressures, Prof. Balthazar Bayard moved to Alphen in Utrecht, Netherlands when his children were young. Subsequent history of this family is in/from the predominantly Protestant Netherlands.1 Name variation: Prof. Balthazar Bayard.1
