The first census of the United States was held in 1790. The following states were part of this census: Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachussetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Vermont. The census for Kentucky, Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey and Virginia has been lost. An index to Virginia has been recreated from extant tax-lists. Some other counties also have been recreated this way. Even though Maine was still part of Massachussetts, it has its own census, because it was a separate federal court district.
