Phineas Jenkins was born on 5 Apr 1785 in Newberry County, South Carolina.1 He married Mary Furnas, daughter of Thomas Wilkinson Furnas and Rachel Coate, on 13 Jan 1811 at Monroe Township, Ohio.1,3 He died on 19 Nov 1840 in Winamac, Indiana.1 He was buried at Winamac on his own land. This land became later the Winamac Cemetery.4
