They first attempted to sail a northern route but were stopped by ice. In 1609 they employed Henry Hudson to sail westward in the Half Moon when he discovered the Hudson River. This led to the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam.1

     Hester La Grange was born at Leyden, The Netherlands. She married Gerald De Forest, son of Jean de Forrest and Anne Maillard, on 12 August 1611 at Leyden.1

     Hester La Grange and Gerald had six children baptised in Walloon (Vrouwenkerk), Leyden. The mother is only listed with two of them.2 Hester's parents were from France. Her mother Annygje La Grange is a witness at the marriage.1 Married name: De Forest.
