Kendall is a family name of local tradition in England and represents a contraction of Ken-Dale, i.e. a dale on the river Ken in the counmty of Westmorland.
The common ancestor of the New England Kendalls was undoubtedly Francis Kendall, born in England, coming to this country about 1640. He settled in Woburn, Mass with a brother, Thomas.
It is thought that the father of Francis and Thomas was John Kendall, the son of John Kendall and Mary Nule(?). Francis Kendall was an Anabaptist. (Deacon) Thomas settled in Reading and had 10 daughters, no surviving sons.¹
