Nicolaas Maat was born in September 1832 in 's-Heerenhoek, Zuid Beveland, Zeeland, The Netherlands.2,3 He married Pieternella Traas on 27 October 1864 in 's-Heer Arendskerke, Zuid Beveland, Zeeland, The Netherlands.2

His parents were Cornelis Maat and Janna van Zweden.2 Nicolaas Maat and Pieternella Maat immigrated on the Edam, from Rotterdam, arriving 2 May 1893 in New York with three children: Pieter (17), Janna (16) and Johanna (15). Their last residence was Goes, and they were going to Canfield, NJ (?)4 Nicolaas Maat and Pieternella Traas lived in 1898 in Passaic, Passaic County, New Jersey.5
