The 1860 census lists John Thorp and Maria at Washington Township, Bergen County, New Jersey, (This may or may not be him.)3 John Thorp was in 1860 a farmer.3
We have found no primary record of Maria's maiden name, and we hold conflicting information. On one hand, John Thorp is buried in the Richard Hopper section of the Old Hook Cemetery section of Westwood Cemetery, Westwood, NJ. But, nearby to his burial are Blauvelt burials. The Blauvelt Genealogy gives his wife's name as Mary Blauvelt, daughter of Cornelius Blauvelt, mentioned in the will of her grandfather, Abraham Blauvelt. John Thorp's stone is barely legible in 2010, and the stone to the right of his is even less readable, providing no clues, but may be related. (Photos are in EJT Headstone files) The Blauvelt Genealogy also gives Mary and William J. Thorp as children of John Thorp and Maria Blauvelt, while the Montross family history and other genealogists list William J. Thorp as the youngest son of John Thorp and Maria Lent.
The Brouwer Genealogy database also gives Maria Blauvelt as John's wife, and may be most authoritative, given that information was taken from Mary Isobel Montgomery, widow of Edward Everett Thorpe from John Thorp's Bible in the possession of Willard Gardner Thorp, John's grandson.
The Zabriskie Family also has Maria's surname as Blauvelt.4,2,5,6
Montross family history lists eight children with Maria Lent, the youngest of which is William, the only child who remained in touch with his father after he remarried and moved to New Jersey. We know that his second wife who may have been either Maria Hopper, or Maria Blauvelt, was described as much younger. The Montross family history states he married 2nd Maria, and had Mary E. Thorp who married Aaron Tuers of Bergen. The Blauvelt Genealogy gives his second wife's name as Mary Blauvelt, daughter of Cornelius Blauvelt, mentioned in the will of her grandfather, Abraham Blauvelt.
Burial site is in older part of Westwood Cemetery (Old Hook Cemetery), near other Blauvelt graves, but in the Richard Hopper section, and the headstone is nearly unreadable. (EJT) Excerpt below provides brief bio from Sixth Generation
Maria Lent m. 1812 John Thorp b. 2i Mar. 1i88 in Marlborough Town, Ulster Co., N.Y., son of Peter and Jemima (Turnere) Thorp;* John d. 26 June 1868 on his farm in Westwood, Bergen Co., N.J; bur. Old Hook cem., Westwood, in the Richard Hopper plot. John married (2) Maria (Mary) and had dau. Mary Thorp, who m. Aaron Tuers of Bergen Co. and lived in Westwood and Ramapo, N.J.
Shortly after the marriage of John Thorp and Maria Lent, John enlisted to fight in the War of 1812. He served as a private in the 9th Regiment New York Artillery (Militia) in Capt. Thomas C. Butler's Company and was stationed in forts of New York harbor. For his services he received land warrants. Returning to the vicinity of Peekskill, NY he and Maria resided there until about 1825, when John's church membership was transferred from the Dutch Reformed Church there to the Presbyterian Church in Yorktown, Westchester Co, The records of the Presbyterian Church there under
date of 6 Feb. 1825 state: "Mr. Thorp appeared and produced a certificate of admission from the Dutch Church, Cortland, and requested to become a member. Request granted",
But John Thorp found little comfort in the Presbyterian Church, as an entry of 13 May 1821 shows: "Mr. John Thorp having conscientious scruples on the subject of infant baptism requested dismission with a view of joining our brethren of the Baptist denomination in New York City." The Thorps lived in New York City until a short time before 1832, when John obtained, by claims growing out of his war service, a grant of land near Spencer, N.Y. While they lived there, Maria died shortly thereafter.
John subsequently moved to Washington Township, Bergen Co., N.]., and purchased several small farms near Westwood. He married again, his second wife being named Maria also. Her surname was probably Hopper, since John was buried in the Richard Hopper plot in Old Hook cemetery, Westwood.
John's second wife was much younger than he, a circumstance which may have contributed to a rift between John and his children by his first wife, except William, the youngest. This rift was due also to the fact that John's strictly orthodox religious views antagonized most of his older children. William remained closer to his father and became a Baptist preacher.
His will was dated 29 Feb 1868, proved 6 July 1868. He passes over all of his chidren except son William and daughter Mary. John's real estate was sold for $4000. It consisted of four tracts of land in Washington Township, Bergen County, NJ.2

Jemima d. 1841 in New York City.
Peter and Jemima lived in Marlborough town for about 5 years; from 1790 to 1809 at Newburgh, N.Y., where they were members of the Old School Baptist Church; and in New York City, where he taught school on Hudson St. for years and where "our beloved sister Jemima Thorp" was a member (6 Oct. 1838) of the North Beriah Baptist Church.
Peter enlisted during the Revolutionary War on 20 Jan. 1777 in the 3rd Regiment, New Jersey Line, and was in active service for about 2 years. He applied for a pension 1 Apr. 1818 at Essex Co., N.J., and received $8 per month. His application stated that he had received badges of merit but that he had had the misfortune to lose the papers. On 13 July '1820 he wrote the Pension Board from Newark, N.J., reciting that he was a resident of Rahway, N.J; was 61 years old the 11th of June last; and that for 25 years he had been sorely afflicted with rheumatism and sciatica; that he formerly taught school but by reason of weak eyes had been obliged to quit sometime in the summer of 1818, after which he undertook to mend shoes for his neighbors but could not follow it; that his wife Jemima was a cripple, occasioned by a fall from a horse bv which she broke her collar bone and dislocated her right shoulder and wrist; that she often got some kind neighbor to wash for her, as she was not able to do much work herself; that they had, for many years before he drew a pension, been helped by public but chiefly by private charity, but with his pension he rents a small tenement for $20 per annum; tends a garden, and by using strict economy they lived in a degree comfortable, but should his pension be stopped they should inevitably fall victims to public charity. Accompanying this statement was an inventory of his personal possessions with a total value estimated to be about $50. A few of the items listed follow: 1 gum table; 1 cherry stand; 1 school desk and stool; 1 common carpet wove by my son-in-law and by him given to my wife; 14 old chairs; 1 small

On 28 Dec. 1838 Jemima Tharp (her mark) appeared before Marine Court of the City of New York in order to obtain benefit of the provisions of the Act of 7 July 1838 entitled "An Act of Congress granting half pay and pensions to certain widows". She supplied the date of her marriage and the date of her husband's death. Henry C. Thorp of New York, N.Y., on the same day introduced a leaf from the family Bible of Peter Tharp, deceased, which leaf gave the names and birth dates of each of the 10 children of Peter and Jemima.
