Carlstadt Mourns the Loss of An Able and Beloved School Teacher

Prof. Richard Geppert, principal of the Green street school at Newark from 1868 to 1874, and since then principal of Carlstadt public school started early in July on a visit to his eldest daughter in Baden (?), Germany, where she was being educated. Last Saturday morning his wife and the other two children received a letter, stating that he would leave Rotterdam on Aug. 17. On Saturday afternoon, howver, his brother Hugo Geppert of Newark, received a cable despatch stating that Prof. Richard Geppert had died of a paralytic stroke while on the way to Rotterdam in Amersfoort near Utrecht, Holland. He was born in 1839, and leaves many friends in Newark and in Bergen County, who mourn his death.4

Hackensack Republican, 9 December 1889, pg. 3, col. 2.5
There were a number of other articles about Prof. Geppert's death.

School Principal's Sudden Death
The Body Received Last Week by a Brother in Newark - Almost Unrecognizable
In view of the shocking condition in which the body of the late Professor Geppert of Carlstadt, was when it arrived from Holland last Saturday, his friends have decided to ask the American Minister in Holland to make as investigation as to the cause of his death. Professor Geppert, who had been principal of the public school at Carlstadt for several years, went to Europe a few months ago, intending to spend his vacation there. He was a hale, hearty man, and his family physician never saw any reason to suspect that he would be carried off by sudden death. The Professor's brother, who lives in Newark gave instructions to have the remains embalmed and forwarded at once. He also requested the authorities in Holland to forward the dead man's baggage and money. In due time he was notified that his instructions had been carried out. The remains arrived here last week, and the funeral took place in Newark on Saturday. The body had not been embalmed, and none of the features were recognizable. The grayish beard and peculiar shape of the forehead were the only means by which his relatives could identify him. Some of the property that Professor Geppert had with him has not been accounted for. He had about $200 in money and a good deal of clothing, and a portion of these effects were forwarded. There is suspicion that he met with foul play.

Bergen Index, 17 Sep 1889, pg. 1, col. 4
Paralysis Killed Him
The report that there is suspicion of foul play in the case of Professor Geppert, who was buried in Newark on Saturday, is emphatically denied by relations. Mr. Geppert was a school principal at Carlstadt for the past fifteen years, prior to which he was a teacher in the Green street German-English school at Newark. His brother resides at No. 67 Hamburgh place, Newark. Mr. Geppert died of a paralytic stroke in Holland, and the remains were returned to his brother.
Word was sent that they be embalmed, but it probably was too late, as the order was not complied with. They were abundantly identified however, by another brother in Europe, before shipment, and by his brother here. By an omission in the certificate of death the cause was not stated, but it was supplied by further advices received on Friday, which stated he was stricken by paralysis, while in a coupe and was taken out dead.

County Superintendent Terhune, Prof. Haas and Dr. Burnett, and several other teachers in the county were present, also delegations from the German American Teachers association, Germania Sterbe Kasse and the Carlstadt Turn Verein, of which eight members acted as pall bearers.6
