Both Henry and John served as privates during the War of 1812 in Capt. Matthew McCown's 4th Regt. Va. Militia until their company was mustered out at Lambert Point, VA. Sarah came from Rockingham County, VA to Preston County about 1800. Her father served in the Revolutionary War.4 He settled at Johnstown, in Garret County, MD, about 1826 named in his honor (now called Hoyes). The farm was later owned by D.O. DeWitt.2,3 John bought Military Lots Nos. 1664, 1665, 1680 and 1682 from James H McFadon of Baltimore. This formerly was called Johnstown in his honor and later called Hoyes, Garrett County.1
