Travels

My husband’s grandfather Mar Broekman (dutch link) worked from around 1905 in the Dutch East Indies on the island of Java. He and grandma traveled a number of times to and from Holland. In March 1907 they send a postcard from Suez to her brother Herman Voss (dutch link) in Julich. It must have been quite a trip with a three year old. I am sure that they had reasonable accommodations, he was a manager at a sugar plantation. They traveled from Amsterdam (leaving 23 Feb 1907) first to Southampton, then (with possible stops in between) to Genoa, and from there through the Suez Canal to Java. We have postcards from the harbor of Southampton, the harbor of Genoa, the Suez Canal, and the souvenir card below.
