Pieter Moriau (1620-)

Pieter Moriau (Meriau, Moreau) (dutch link) was baptized 8 Apr 1620 in the Walloon Church in Amsterdam. He was the son of IJsbrandt Moriau and Jeanne du Pire, and my husband’s 9th great-grandfather.

IJsbrandt and Jeanne were Walloons; when they married in Amsterdam in 1617, he was from Valenciennes, she had lived in Middelburg, Netherlands, but undoubtedly also was of Walloon ancestry. Here my husband’s and my son-in-law’s ancestry intersects, which is rather interesting. While so far there don’t seem to be any direct connections, these two branches certainly come from the same group.

Pieter married Susanna Maillaert in 1641, the banns were registered 27 Apr 1641 in Amsterdam. His witness was IJsbrant Moreau, his father; hers was Judith Maillaert, whose relation to Susanna was not stated. Susanna was from Leiden; where in 1603 Jean de Forest and Anne Maillaert have a child David, the ancestors of the De Forests of Bergen County.

Pieter and Susanna have five children baptized in Amsterdam in the Walloon Church, the witnesses are still a bit of a mystery, aside from his parents. Lots more research remains to be done.
