Jacob Edelman (1903-)

Jacob Edelman was born 15 Mar 1903, the eldest son of Morris Edelman and Rose Goldman. He is the granduncle of my son-in-law, half-brother of his grandfather.

I have written about Rose before, her story is a sad one. When Jacob’s father died in 1912 of tuberculosis, the three eldest children spent some time in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum. The remarks on the intake card are

No insurance. Man was ill + out of work 18 weeks. Woman lived on
?? – now exhausted. Woman expects to work. Had no assistance.
UHC has offered rent + 3 per week, but she considered that
inadequate. No relations able to assist⁽¹⁾

Jacob at first ran away from the Asylum (as an 8 jr old), but ends up going in and out, as his mother’s circumstances change with her getting together with Samuel Widoff. I have still not been able to find a marriage certificate for Rose and Samuel, or a birth certificate of the half-brother Joseph.

Jacob goes on to marry Lena Medwin, daughter  of Sam Medwin and Tillie Datoff, in 1929. Nothing more is known about them. Possibly Lena died in 1933, a Lena Edelman of the appropriate age is buried in Montefiore Cemetery (but I have not pursued that yet.) I cannot find Jacob in any census after 1925. While in 1930 Rose’s other children are still living with her, Jacob is not. Where did he go?
