Elisa Marx-Lichtenstein (1832-1917)

Gravestone of Elise Marx Lichtenstein and her husband Coopman in the Jewish cemetery in Julich

It was 185 years ago today that Elisa Marx was born on 10 Dec 1832 in Korrenzig, Germany. I have not found her parents yet. She married Coopman Lichtenstein, my husband’s great-granduncle, who was born in Waldenrath. Both towns are slightly northwest of Julich, where the couple moved before 1870, as their four children are all born there. Their eldest and only daughter Sophia died at age nine; their three sons, Max, Bernard and Siegmund lived to adulthood. Elisa died in 1917, she got to know her grandchildren, the children of her son Max. And she was spared the horrors of the second World War, which saw her family decimated (Max had died in 1939): Bernard was killed in Riga, Siegmund in an unknown concentration camp, her daughter-in-law Regina in Theresienstadt, grandson Ernst in Poland, granddaughters Leni and Erna in an unknown concentration camp. Only one granddaughter survived Auschwitz, but she lost her husband there.
