Thomas Dewey was born c 1608. According to some he was from Sandwich, Kent, England, but there is no documentation for that. Most likely he was from the West Country, as were so many of the settlers of Dorchester.1 He married Francis on 22 Mar 1638/39 at Windsor, Connecticut.1,3 He died on 27 Apr 1648 in Windsor, Connecticut,1,3, and was buried at Windsor.2
Other information:
Thomas Dewey was a farmer. The inventory indicates farming at a subsistence level only. He signs with a mark.1 Thomas immigrated bt 1630 - 1633 to Dorchester, Massachusetts. He may have come on the unnamed ship that came from Weymouth, Dorsetshire, and landed in New England in Jul of 1633.1
He took the freeman's oath on 14 May 1634 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony1 On 1 Dec 1634 he was granted an 8-acre lot in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Later he was granted several other lots. He sold five parcels of land (including his house) to Richard Jones on 12 Aug 1635, probably in preparation for his moving to Windsor.1
Thomas Dewey and George Phelps were among the first settlers of Windsor4 In 28 Feb 1640 Thomas held five parcels, which he had received by grant: a home lot of seven acres, four and a quarter acre of meadow, a planting lot, and several others. He is shown to sell and buy various parcels.1
Thomas Dewey died intestate. The settlement mentions six boys and two girls: Mary age 12 yr, Thomas age 8 yr, Josiah age 7 yr, Anna age 5 yr, Israel age 3 yr, and Jedediah age 3/4 yr. The inventory, taken 19 May 1648 at Windsor, was valued at £213, £118 in real estate: a house and barn, the homelot about one and a quarter acre (£40), seven acres of meadow, next to the homelot (£20), several parcels in the Great Meadow (£13, £10, and £15), and two parcels of upland (£20.)1
