Saertje Jans (1647-)

Saertje Jans was baptized 3 Mar 1647, third daughter of Jan Dircks and Aeltie Jorisz. She is my husband’s 8th great-grandaunt. Of the four children I have found, probably only one survives, the second daughter Hendrikje (dutch link) marries IJsbrand Portielje, and they go on to have progeny. As Aeltje is listed as 21 when she married in 1638, I decided to check, whether there was a baptism in 1617. There was: Aeltie, daughter of Joris Hubertsz en Hendrikje Jans was baptized 14 Mar 1617 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. Sponsor was a Hilletje Jans. Unfortunately these parents have no other children baptized.

The sponsors for Aeltie’s children are not very informative, except maybe for the last child, Jores; a Lijsbet Claes is sponsor, and an Abraham Jorisse (who may have been a witness to the banns of Jan Dircks and Aeltie, married a Lijsbet Claes in 1634. He is 22, so born in 1612, and lo and behold there is a Abraham, son of Joris, baptized in 1612, but his parents are Jores Benner en Fem Augustijns.(1) And the sponsor is no help: Henrik Barents.

Jores and Femme have quite a few children baptized, but no Aeltie. Abraham and Lijsbet have at least ten children: Aeltje (1635, sp. Trijntje Jans), Hendrikje (1637, sp. Aeltje Joris), Aeltje (1639, sp. Fijtje Claesz), Hendrikje (1641, sp. Grietje Claes), Aaltje (1644, sp. Maritje Claesz), Joris (1646, sp. Pietertje Goossens), Neeltje (1648, sp. Susanna Jans), Joris (1650, sp. Hilletien ? and Anna Jansz), Treintien (1651, sp. Jurrien ?), and Joris (1655, sp. Joris Doorn).

So while Abraham and Lijsbet have a daughter Hendrikje, which could have been named after his mother, and an Aeltje Joris (who could be Abraham’s sister) is a sponsor to that baptism, it is still far from clear that Aeltje and Abraham are siblings. The baptisms are somewhat suggestive: Abraham’s wife could be sponsor to one of Aeltje’s children, and Aeltje could be sponsor to one of Abraham’s children. The Claesz witnesses are related to Lijsbeth, but are the Jansz witnesses related to Aeltje’s mother Hendrikje Jansz? We probably will never know.
