John Root (1608-1684)

John Root was baptized 26 Feb 1608 in Badby, Northamptonshire, England, son of John Root and Mary Ann Russell. He is my son-in-law’s 9th great-grandfather.

John came to the new world before 1640, he has a child baptized in Farmington, CT in 1642. It is unclear, which ship he came on; his wife’s family came on the ‘Increase’ in 1635. Some sources say John came on the ‘Hercules’ or ‘Increase,’ but he is not found on the surviving passenger lists of those ships.

Root genealogical records. 1600-1870, by James P. Root, quoting a Jessie Root. (pg. 314-5)
While some sources claim that John was among the founders of Hartford, he is not listed on the Founder’s Monument there, so he cannot have been there before Feb 1639/40. It seems more likely, he went to Farmington shortly after coming to the new world, without going to Hartford. He married Mary Kilbourne in Farmington, and they have eight children there.

And they left lots of progeny, that spread all over the United States.
